I found this 60-1 Chiefs Special Target Model today. Gun is in excellent condition. Never seen one of these around my neck of the woods. Was a pleasant surprise in a local pawn shop. Has the ALU serial prefix. SN# ALU12xx

The letter in spin132's post is an anomaly, just as is the letter for my Model 60-1 -- look at the last line in the first paragraph, where the tip of my pen is pointing.

The majority of letters I've seen use the 660 production number.

I have always had some strange attraction to the 2" adjustable sighted guns, and one of the favorites in my collection is a model 34 2".
If I ever come across a 60 Ashland despite my deep distaste for stainless I would definitely pick it up.
My holy grail would be one of the model 36 or 50 2" square butts

Jon,
Great addition to the Family

So many people think that little snubbies are not very accurate.

Back in 1985 when I Purchased one of the 2" Model 60, Chiefs Special Target revolvers I learned just how wrong those beliefs are. I should have kept that ShotGun News ad, but in those days I was not thinking it would end up as a low production collectible revolver

The adjustable sight picture really takes these up a notch. I added the red insert to the one I carried. Years later I bought a second one just so it could be pretty :)

Like Many of you here, I like the look of the little gun with the BIG Shark Fin on it.

A bit of cheating some of those are 22/32 Kit Guns

I carried my Model 60, Chiefs Special Target as my ankle gun until Smith started offering the J-Magnum. I switched to the snubby with more power and waited for the J-Magnum Chiefs Special Target to be released. I probably have to make my own if I want one :(

MajorD,
I got Very Lucky about 7 years ago when I came upon this Model 50 complete with the box and all else that we are used to. This owner had more than one and kept this one looking pretty. This is from the 1972 run

RoiVin,
This same owner also had a 3" Model 36 Chiefs Special Target in the same condition, I could not resist. This one is from 1975

I think we need to defer to a higher authority to get ever settle on a number of 3" CSTs produced

The 36CST loses that Shark Fin appeal because of the use of the more modern base and sight construction, this is due to the revolver wearing a ribbed barrel

I just purchased a 3" Model 60 with adjustable sights.
Do you by chance know how many of these were produced?

Is it a .38 Special (Model 60-4) or a .357 Magnum (Model 60-10 or higher dash number)?

I've never seen production numbers on either, but the 60-4 was a limited production model between 1990 and 1995.

It's a 60-4, .38 Special. In my SCSW 3rd edition, I read that these started as a limited edition in 1990, and then became standard production in 1992.

The information on the engineering changes is confusing, e.g. shows 60-3 (1988), 60-4 (1990), 60-5 (also 1990), and 60-6 (1989!). The dashes aren't chronological, and sometimes seemed to be used to designate a model variation. I haven't seen this in other S&W models.

Colt, Thad model 50 looks like perfection! I would very likely destroy its value with shooting and carry I& I ever find one. My only hope is for one of the model 36 marked guns to be sitting in a used gun counter at used fixed sight price.

Back when they came out I was a ffl holder and ordered a consecutively numbered pair. Later I sold one to one of my long time, since 1970, college friends with the agreement that whoever gives up the ghost first the other gets the pair...

...so far I am glad to report neither of us has collected...

Both of us had yellow inserts put in the front sight blade. Both guns have been shot but not much...and still have the boxes and paperwork...

This is one of those concepts, an adjustable sight snubbie, that the demand was there, but S&W just wasn't smart enough to run with it...always have to ask "why?"

You'd think living in Ohio I would see more Ashlands. The only one I recognized was a three inch 66. I bought it but would have irregardless of it being an Ashland.

I am fortunate to own several Chief Special Targets in both stainless and blue. So resisting shooting one or two is not too difficult

The gentleman those two came from had more than a dozen CSTs in various conditions. I got the two best looking

I also acquired a 1953 airweight 22/32 kit gun from him in similar condition but no box

If I had more cash that day, I would have come home with more revolvers :)

Picked her up and re-installed the period correct stocks. It is a really nice example. First one I have ever seen for sale locally and I have owned and handled quite a few S&W's. Just doesn't seem to be very many around, especially for sale. Now I need to find a model 50 to keep it company.

Very nice find, Jon!

You are correct, my 60-1 enjoys having company that shares a likeness. Yours will too.
The CST pictured is a three-screw and not model marked (from the 1959 batch).
