60s 38 Special

Hey Fellas,

A friend of mine shot me these pics this morning asking me about the gun. I'm not a revolver guy and know zero about it. His uncle had it for ~10 years and he's had it for ~40. Probably doesn't have 200 rnds through it and is in very good shape.

Question is, what is it and what's it worth?

Beautiful S&W revolver, looks to be all original. 1947. Hand ejector model 1905 4th change. Known as a K frame "pre-model 10". 5 screw, one line address on frame, "S" frame, and , oh yes--long action. Others in the forum know more and will probably add refinements to the ID. Around here, it would go for an estimate of $400-$450. Very nice indeed

I would agree with that date estimate. $400 might be on the high end in my neighborhood, but prices vary a lot, especially with these older guns. Post this on the hand ejector 1896-1961 forum and you may get a bit more info.

The "S" prefix indicates the new hammer block modification (1945). This also has the older long-throw hammer. The "C" prefix and four line address started in 1948. The finish looks pretty good. Nice!

The catalog is not precise on this series of numbers.
It says #S811,120 was made in 1945 and # S999,999 in 1948, so it's toward the end there.
You have a model of what was basically the "workhorse" revolver for S&W. It was introduced in 1899 as the Military and Police model and in 1957 it was re-named the M10. It's actually still in production.
If you are an S&W revolver collector you have to have at least one M&P revolver, or we won't show you the secret handshake.

You have a nice copy of the finest revolver ever made - the S&W model (pre) 10!

$400ish is about right. It would be more like $300ish, but those diamond grips (properly called 'stocks') are worth a good amount by themselves.
