I decided to take this one out last night for a good cleaning. 10 shot and shoots like a dream! Anybody else have a pre lock 10 shot?

No, sure wish I did. I have been looking for a 617-4 4 inch 10 shot that is like new in box for sometime now. They sure are hard to find. I have even thought about a 6 inch. Great looking guns guys!!

I WISH THAT I DID ! ! ! I LOOKED FOR A 4", PRE-IL, 617--EITHER 6 OR 10 SHOT-- FOR MANY MONTHS. FINALLY, I HAD TO BITE THE BULLET, AND PURCHASE A NEW ONE. ITS A 10 SHOT. ITS THE ONLY S&W THAT I OWN WITH THE IL. I LIKE IT, BUT IT DID HAVE TO GO BACK TO S&W, BECAUSE IT WAS SPITTING LEAD. I SWAPPED OUT THE SIGHTS AND SLAPPED A PAIR OF AHRENDS ON IT---AS WELL AS "THE PLUG". I HAVE A NO-DASH, 8 3/8", 6 SHOOTER THAT I LIKE MUCH MORE. BELOW ARE PICS OF THE TWO...

Wow! Those tactical Ahrends were really made for that M617. I am curious as to the fit of the tacticals due to reading they have a larger profile than the Retros which is all I have purchased thus far. I have small to med size hands, can you give me any advice on how they might work for me? Thanks

I HAVE THE SAME SIZE HANDS AS YOU DO, raylan007. I USE AHRENDS SMOOTH, TACTICAL, CONVERSIONS ON ALL OF MY S&Ws THAT COME WITH THE FINGER GROOVE GOODYEARS, BECAUSE THEY DON'T FIT MY HANDS. JERRY M SAYS THAT FINGER GROOVES--INCLUDING S&W COMBATS--ONLY FIT 10% OF SHOOTERS. I AM NOT ONE OF THEM…..

THE AHRENDS FIT ME PERFECTLY. THEY GIVE ME GOOD GRIP, AND CONTROL OF MY REVOLVERS--EVEN THROUGH HEAVY RECOIL. I THINK THAT YOU WILL LOVE THEM….

I have a 6" 617-4 10 shot pre lock that I picked up locally a few months ago, my new favorite piece! I was worried about hearing about how muzzle heavy the 6" is, but I don't have a problem, even after a few 500+ rd outings.

I have a 10 shot 617 with a 6" barrel and don't find it muzzle heavy at all. Mine has the internal lock but that just doesn't bother me much at all. My 617 is by far and away my favorite firearm.

I can't remember the last time I saw a pre lock 617 ten shot 4" for sale. What dash numbers were the 10 shot steel cylinders produced? What's the going price?

I have a 617-4, ten round, Six inch model. Would love a 4" to keep it company........but I'm not complaining.

IIRC, the -4 had the 10 hole SS while the -2 had 10 hole aluminum. The others were 6 shot. All pre-lock.
The -6 had both 10 shots and IL.
The current going price last I saw; high to very high. :)

Some of the late 617-2s had stainless steel cylinders but the majority had aluminum.

Here are my two 617-4s sporting the aforementioned Ahrends:

Here's an interesting 10 shot 617 which was pictured in a S&W publication some years ago. It appears to be a 617 no dash given its features but note the unusual stainless steel 10 shot cylinder which only has six flutes and does not have individually recessed chambers, which you can compare to my cylinder above. This could be an early prototype 10 shot.

AS FAR AS I KNOW, ONLY THE -2 HAD THE ALUMINUM CYLINDER. ALTHOUGH THEY DO EXIST, I HAVE NEVER SEEN A PRE-IL 4", 10 SHOT FOR SALE...
