617-6 upgrades

Not that this gun needed upgrades but... Vortex Venom on an Allchin mount and Kim Ahrend's Retro Target Moradillo grips. This is my first revolver with anything but iron sights. It is SERIOUSLY fun to shoot. Stay tuned for ammo testing!!

Congratulations. Look into having a trigger job completed to smooth out and lighten your double action pull. Then, when lots of practice you will learn how to accurately shoot double action...which I find is the most satisfying any any pistol shooting.
As mentioned, many rounds are needed to learn this technique. These products will allow to fire off close to 500 rounds in short order.

A few tools will help you with the cleaning. When you find your empty cases are difficult to eject this tool will make quick work of cleaning the cylinder chambers.

Thanks for the information on the cleaning tools and speed loaders. I have a few DS-10 loaders that work really well. I will check those out too. The double action trigger pull is heavy but relatively smooth. I only have 450 rounds through it but it seems to shoot really well. I haven't done any accuracy testing with the red dot yet but the sight allows for more precise shots. Again, thanks for the info.

Apex Tactical now has a new trigger kit for the 617 that they say will give you a guaranteed double action pull of only 6.5 pounds.

Do not just get the one listed on their website. You need to call and ask for the new drop-in kit.

The only "upgrades" to mine were Ahrends grips and the 22 cylinder reamer treatment.

I am so happy with my 617-4 pre-lock 22LR. It came as you see below. I have bought 20 dry wall anchors to use as snap-caps, works great. And I bought a S&W K frame rear sight assembly, just incase I tire of the scope. Over all it is a keeper for decades to come.

The 617s have lots of room for personalization. Some day, purists will be looking for collectible, unaltered examples and any of us old farts who are still around will be quietly laughing at them because we had fun using our 22s the way they were intended... to shoot stuff!

I did about the same thing, and liked it so much I did a 986 Pro Class the same.

Just had to show mine again.

617 with C-More Red Dot, 6.5 pound double action. Apex Hammer and Firing Pin, Stock Mainspring, lots of polishing and fitting.

Now you can get the same trigger pull as a drop in for only $ 150.

I use the #6 dry wall anchors and dry fire the heck out of this gun. It's had well over 20000 rounds without a misfire. Using the right ammo helps. Mine shoots great with Blazer, but for matches I use Federal HV.

Once you tune your gun make sure you try a lot of different ammo to see what will work 100 % of the time.

I use DS10 speedloaders and have 16 of them. Every time some local bottom feeder wins one they give it to me. Thanks to all you auto shooters.

I don't have any firearms that are in collectible, unshot condition. There is absolutely nothing wrong with collecting. Just not my thing. I like to shoot. I like to shoot a lot lol.

I really want to try the drop in trigger upgrade. Mine seems to shoot well with Blasers also but they are also the hardest to eject from the cylinder. Harder than the others, I should say.

After looking at you guy's 617, I think I want that same mount for mine. That mount sits the red dot a lot lower than what I have now. Those are all very nice looking 617's. Here is my M617-6

Is there any way to mount a red dot on a 17-6 without modifications/machining?
Looking for plug and play.

Look under the top strap, are there holes there (under the sight)? I don't recall when they started to drill & tap all the top straps on K Frames.

I put the Apex mass driver hammer, as well as a Power custom trigger in my 617-6, and also polished everything inside. The trigger is really smooth but I'm somewhat disappointed that I can't get the trigger below about 9 lbs,DA, which is the only way to shoot it with that trigger. And no matter what you cannot put any reduced power main spring in it, as you will get ftf's! It's going up for sale asap, as I have a prelock 617-2 stock that has a lighter trigger and just as smooth, without $300 worth of hammer and trigger!

The 17-6 uses the old rear sight base and doesn't have the three mount holes.
