617 accuracy

I just got mine cleaned up and ready to go today. I need some suggestions getting it "range ready". It's a -1 model round butt and I would like to upgrade the sights and the grips since it has little pachs on it.

Any suggestions on some big hefty wood grips and some better sights?

Thanks,

dale

I shot it a few times. The problem is that both the front and rear sight are all black. I think the gun has been used so much the paint has worn off the sights. I might just get one of my friends who paints models to put a white box on the rear sight and a red stripe on the front sight so it will match my 686. I was just thinking they made better replacement sights. Probably not worth the price.

The grips how ever do need work. Holding up that 6" fully lugged barrel using that little round butt grip is not working. It looks pretty weird as well with the micro grips on it.

I put these grips on mine.
Pachmayr&reg Pachmayr your primary source for quality handgun grips and recoil pads
They are actually made for the square butt, but since they are rubber, there are no exposed sharp edges to cut you. This is my preferred grip on all L frames I shoot, since they match my hand size very well.

As for the sights, I use the 6" 617 for .22 silhouettes, and I like the stock sights for that precision shooting. The 100yd ram is about 4 X 6 inches, and the gun will hit it every time if I hold it still. WIN std vel ammo.
I like red fronts for action pistol shooting with the 686, and stick to the plain black rear (concentrating on the front sight).
I suppose if you used the 617 for .22 steel matches, you could paint the front sight for quicker acquisition.

Seems that the six shot ones shoot better for what thats worth. Timing four fewer chambers is easier I guess. Still, once you find the ammo your 10 shot likes, it will shoot better than most people.

I bought two 617's recently, one 6 shot 617-1 and one 10 shot 617-2. I decided to give the 617-2 to my son. I have not shot either one, so I cannot say how they will shoot, but I did buy a 6 shot cylinder for the 617-2 and installed it in the gun. All I had to do was change out the hand and of course file the ratchets to fit the hand. It came out nice with excellent carry-up. Hopefully we will be able to get to the range soon to check them out. I can always install the 10 shot cylinder again if he would like that one instead. I'm also going to put a red dot sight on my 617-1.

Most "Target " sights ARE all black. Action sights tend to have dots and inserts for fast vs deliberate target sighting. Still if you want to try new sights, I'd suggest some fluorescent model paint before spending $.( Just white undercoat first. Then top color. Apply with toothpick.) That said, I do like the Fiber Optic front sight set-up that soem around here are running.
As for grips, they are a personal thing. If bullseye shooting , something with a thumb rest is nice, however if two hand/switch hand action shooting, forget the thumbrest. Grips for K frames basicly come in three sizes/configurations. In order of small to large look for: (S) front & back of the grip frame exposed, (M)back only exposed, (L)nothing exposed. I personally like Hogue Monogrips but that's just personal.
Lastly, I'd suggest saving your $ for good ammo. Accuracy is about consistency and I've yet to see cheapo high velocity stuff shoot consistently.
FWIW, all my .22 target pistols ( including 6, mod 17/617's) shoot Wolf Match Target VERY well.

p.s If your going to do any action/game shooting, get some good DS speedloaders.

I agree. I'm old school... I used hunter orange/red on my front sights back in the 70's. I used a tiny model brush. I read about it in Cooper's original "Cooper on Handguns".

I like Hogue monogrips... with exposed back strap... I still have them on my old duty gun. I find a covered backstrap just adds to the trigger reach. Try a few before you decide.

The black on black is excellent for our type of targetshooting, on the international targets, I primarily shoot the Ten Meter small caliber matches. That is one-hand shooting, 5 on each card.
The 617 is quite an accurate gun, cannot complain about that!

This is what my 617 no-dash 6-shooter did on one of it's first outings to the range, one hand shooting at Ten Meters , end 2007. I'm -almost- sure that the 10 shot will be accurate too.
I traded it for a Model 18 as the 617 is sadly too heavy for me during the 50 rounds matches (10 training-40 for the match).
