Other than its stainless construction and modern round butt it would be a reintroduction of the 18, but we can all use another 18! S&W hasn't used 618 for a model number so maybe that's what it would be. They could even sneak in a run of 3" barrels to feed 3" madness.:D 3" or 4", I bet they'd sell.

No one wants a model 18 with a lock let alone a 618 with a lock. Would be neat though. I still say build one on the N frame and have a 16 shot or whatever they can fit. I do not know how the internals would work out due to timing but it would be neat if they did it. If not then why not in an L frame?

bdGreen,

I love that 617. It doesn't have the 1950s Combat Masterpiece barrel profile, but other than the one stainless "model 18" that was stamped MOD 65 it is indeed as close as S&W came.

In a big book store I once handled a paper back the size of a Gun Digest that had on its cover or back a 617 like yours except for its 8 3/8" (!!!) barrel. I wish I'd bought whatever the book was because I've never seen another suggestion that an 8 3/8" 617 with the barrel profile of a 1970s model 17 exists. Do they exist?

OK, bdGreen, How'd ya do that?
I didn't find it on the S&W website. Seems they no longer catalog the 4" barrel at all, any more.
I have a 6" and like it a lot, but do want a 4" for trail carry.
