One of the next things I would like to purchase is a 617 prelock. The question is, did they make a 617 as a 10 shot prelock/pre MIM? I would prefer to have a 6" barrel prelock/pre MIM. Would I have to get a 617 no dash and have it sent back to S&W for conversion or....?

Thanks in advance.

yep. 10 shot was introduced on 617-2 and those had no mim parts but that was an alloy cyl. Works fine but doesn't match up appearance with the stainless frame. I've got no problem with mim parts. Here's a shot of one of my 10 shots, a 617-4.

Howdy.
I originally wanted a 6" barrel 10-shot 617. I found one with a 4" barrel and found that it balances perfectly. Don't dismiss the 4-incher. If you find a pre-lock 10 shooter, grab it. I looked for 2 years before I found what I was looking for. Mine is a 617-4. It has a stainless steel cylinder. Good luck with your quest.

Great to hear that there is such a beast out there. Thanks both for responding.

My feelings exactly in terms of balance. Although I still like & have the 6".

Found a 617 no dash 6" 6 shot that was in really really nice shape at a local shop in FL on vacation today. They had $699.00 on the tag. I passed for now. I want to try and hold out for the 10 shot. The 6" did feel nicely weighted though.

I've got a 617-4 without the lock but with MIM parts. It's a ten shot with an 8 3/8" barrel. It's a long story how I came about owning this gun but I've got about $650 invested in it.
