617, 6" 10 shot, how much more value should be accessed for a pre-lock model?

I have two in my sights, both in like new condition both with factory shipping boxes, both with Hogue rubber grips

617-2 pre-lock is 200 dollars more than a 617-6 in same condition,

but the -6 has a set of four plastic speed loaders and a tray for them to set in, which I am comfortable I can get for 50$ from the guy with the -6

any thoughts?

If your intent is to shoot it, use it, not sell it I would go with the -6. I have one and find that it shoots just as well as my 17s, 18s and no dash 617. If you want one to put in the safe and not use and hope for appreciation, then the -2 if in excellent condition might be the better choice. Enjoy.

I did not realize they had aluminum cylinder's can you elaborate?

Early -2's had an aluminum cylinder, they put stainless steel cylinders in later -2's.

Mine in the center is a -2 with a SS cylinder. I believe the aluminum cylinders are a slightly different color.

My -2 was bought new and came with a bead blast finish and rubber grips. Now has a different rear sight and Hogue wood grips.

I believe S&W offered a replacement cylinder for the aluminum ones as they did not hold up to wear nearly as well as the stainless ones. I have a -6 in 6", and from a shooting issue the lock is a non-issue. It shoots as well as my 17-4.

Go for the dash six, especially if you can get the speedloaders and block for $50, which is a steal. I have a 617-6 and it has been a great range gun which keeps my older K-22s in the safe most range trips.

I haven't heard of any wear problems with the alloy cylinder. In fact the BBGV sites a 10% premium for it. There are some forum members here who may chime in on that.

I had this transition dash two with a 10-shot stainless cylinder and six-inch barrel. Sold it but kept a dash six four incher.

As you know by now, you got an absolute bargain. Those DS10 speedloaders are a wonderful piece of work. ...........
