I just got a 617 last weekend and, of course, I'm loving it. I have found tha the front sight is a little harder to focus on clearly depending on the lighting conditions. Sometimes it's clear but if the sun is behind a cloud and things get a little gray there's not enough contrast for me.

The sights are the standard factory sights. Are there any other options you guys are using? I went looking and I'm seeing the night sights but nothing else.

I have a 686 and the front sight seems easier to focus on.

Thanks.

Having HiViz sights added to my 617. Still with the gunsmith. Check out hivizsights.com

I find that I need my reading glasses to focus the 617 in less than ideal lighting/background.

The Red/White of the 686 is a little easier, but still comes into sharper focus for me with the glasses.

Took me a while to figure out why some days my groups would almost touch and the next time be all over the target.

I'd be curious how you like it when you get it back.

I put an SDM green fiber optic sight on my 6" 617 and like it very much. I had the same problem as you buy not any more.

I put fluorescent orange model airplane paint on the 617 front sight.

This may not apply to you youngsters out there, but my sight solution is to use a Red Dot sight on many of my revolvers:

I'm an old dude and I find that I visualize Patridge sights, such as those used on the 617, better than ramp sights, such as those used on the 686. Of course, I don't see either terribly well and I've thought at times about putting a red dot on my guns. Doesn't seem to be terribly sporting, however.

Tanzer;
The mount base is stainless steel and I got these from CDNN:

The only fly in the ointment is that CDNN has a "flat rate" shipping charge that may be a bit high for a single mount. However, for two or more the pain gets to be MUCH less. They are flat out the best scope or Red Dot mount base out there. Their extra length gives a person more options in mounting their particular scope or Red Dot - that coupled with the extra strength and appearance of the stainless steel makes this a "first choice" for me.
