Our local (small group) ICORE shooters have finally been introduced to 22LR revolver!!!

Yesterday I had Official Okey-Dokey from our Match Director, to use my 617!!!!

All stages were shot exactly as any big bore, and scoring was exactly the same.

Only condition changed, was on some of the steel, the plate rack for instance, wouldn't reliably fall, or some (surprisingly few) of the larger steel targets might stay upright despite a solid (but tiny) hit.

Not sure of my time as it hasn't been posted yet, and it really doesn't matter anyway. I'm a 'participant' far more than being a 'competitor'.

And only 1 of the 6 stages found the 10-shot cylinder being any possible advantage.

The 22's are fun to shoot. The main thing to iron out would be Speed Loaders, and Belt Carriers for them.

We have 3 local ICORE shooters with 17/617's. All of ours are the older 6 shot versions. HKS makes the 6 shot speed loaders. I think I have around 10 of them so far. I have made everyone kydex Belt Carriers for them.

I put some AR-22 Winchester ammo through mine a while back in a match. Brought blood hitting the ejector rod trying to extract them.
I have noticed you need to brush out the chambers frequently with rimfire. Keeping the chambers clean helps out on the number of rounds you have to finish pushing down with a finger on a reload.

As you were saying Steel is the only issue with rimfire. As long as Reactive Steel is manually tripped, and you keep things like Dueling Trees out of the match, rimfire works fine.
We have a couple Dueling Trees, but we also have plenty of other steel targets, so we do not use them for ICORE at all.

We made up a bunch of 1/2" plywood shims a while back to shim up the steel. This really helps with rimfire. You could take over all the Plates on the Plate Rack, and most all the Tomb Stones after shimming them.

I hope other ICORE Ranges let Rimfire Play on the Big Boy Course of Fire. A little thought setting the match up is all that is required for Rimfire to work fine shooting the Centerfire Course of Fire. My brother and I both have 617's and we set up the matches, so setting the match up Rimfire Friendly is not a problem in Missouri.

And now you know why we ream 17/617 chambers. Saami spec finish reamer and you eject rds without bleeding.

DS-10, Dave Skrzela, originator of "good" speedloaders for the 17/617 and all around nice guy, DS-10-SPEED | Custom speed loaders for the 10 shot S&W 617, 8 shot S&W, Ruger LCR & others, made in the USA . makes speedloaders for both the 6 and 10 shot 17/617s.

I forgot to include my chamber brush but will certainly include it next time. I don't have trouble with ejecting except if I'm sloppy & catch one under the star.

I use the DS-10s with little trouble; once in a while one will loose track of one round....but I use a pouch for the full ones and probably that contributes.

So far the one ICORE match did not find 10 round cylinder to any advantage.....for one, because of my actual PRACTICE.....I've been shooting most of the monthly 'steel challenge' matches the past year with the 617, and that has given me far better trigger discipline.

Also, recent cataract surgery has somehow converted the normal fuzz ball on the end of the muzzle into something the other shooters around here identify as a "front sight".....it seems to help....go figure....

I had trouble with inconsistent ignition when first acquired this used 617. Got that ironed out and went for slick & smooth. The special spring set helped but proved again to be just a tad too light for consistent ignition so I replaced the trigger spring with a slight + version. About ready to tear it back down now after around 6000 rounds & see if a little more smoothness can be gained.

I've also got to figure out how to save/recover the empty/dump of those extra unfired rounds in some stages. Also need to practice my loading procedure. That is where I'm loosing most of my time.

M657 Check this out

Sir, Visit the Shooters Connection web site and watch the video that Ansac Speedloader has on it. North Mountain also has what you may be looking for as a Belt Rig for your speed loaders. I put a HiViz Red front sight on my 6 inch that made a world of difference and you may enjoy as well.
The other place that sells Ansac is 4wheelguns. They don't sell the reloading trays from Ansac though.
Good Luck and have fun.

thanks for the link MD.....this could be a spendy little link...*kaff*kaff*

I got perfect sights, "LPA" IIRC, fiber optic front & rear make HUGE improvement for me.

Steel Challenge Matches

The Steel Challenge Matches are missing a great opportunity to advance hand gunners skill sets in mastering speed re-loading in the Steel events. Here in the Cincinnati area we are required to do a speed re-load during the string of fire. We have had success in adding this dimension to the event without incident with matches having over 100 participants.
Many who have started there shooting hobby by shooting Steel have furthered there fun by jumping up the ladder to USPSA and IDPA. Not to say that Steel is not a Challenge. We have not introduced running with the gun and won't. We will let the USPSA'ers trane them in that. The 617 and right equipment for the Speed Reloads can shoot in either Semi auto or Rim Fire revolver class which ever they prefer. Some just like to see how many semi's they can smoke!
It is all good
Load More ammo while we are in the deep freeze!
