The 4" no dash is arguably the most sought after version of the 617, and with all the goodies is easily an $800 gun these days.

Agreed. After looking for along time, I consider myself fortunate to have found a nice one a year ago for $630 with very pretty checkered target stocks, which I actually prefer to the combats.

According to the smith wesson book ....the product code indicates its a non lug verision that they only made 200 of them ?

You indicated in your original post that you have seen the gun. Did it have the full length barrel underlug like the one in the picture I posted above? If not, it is a scarce variation and the price would be at least double what was previously mentioned.

no it doesn't have the lug. I have never seen one. He said one of the bigger dealers had one at OGCA SHOW AND WANTED 3800.00 dollars for it and he about passed out. My friend paid 300.00 for it when he bought it.Thanks, Joey

It was John Fugate who had that no-lug 617 at the May Ohio Gun Collector's Association show. And, yes, he told me the price was $3800. There were very few of these made and I believe they were originally made for Ashland Shooting Supplies in Ashland, Ohio. Some were 4 inch and some were 6 inch.

A used 6" no lug 617 (gun only) recently sold for $1550.00 on GB, and a 6" that was ANIB sold a few weeks ago for $2000.00+. Let us know and post pics if you are able to acquire it.

Fugate Firearms always seems to have a nice supply of unfired and/or unusual S&W revolvers on hand and listed on GunBroker. I bought an unfired 686-4 PowerPort from them three years ago. My S&W-trained gunsmith confirmed it was unfired and it remains that way today.

You'll pay top dollar for their stuff but if you keep it in the same condition a while, you'll be in it for the right money. I thought I might have paid $100 too much for that 686 but today, I see used ones selling for almost as much.

I have been looking around for more info on my 617 and have found a lot of it here. I have what I believe to be an Ashland 617 in 6" with the original square (sb) grip. What kind of value can I put on this (I have the original box and stuff inside?) is there a way to find how many were made?

If you can find a 4 inch 617 no dash in great condition you better run not walk to buy it.

With all the umpteen hundreds of variants Smith is producing, why wouldn't they reissue the 617 like that, no under-lug ? It would sell-out fast. Sure, the lugged version is like a 686 for those owners, but by the same reasoning, why not have a 617 for the model 64 owners. Or call it a 618.

Maybe make the '618' like the 67 - as it has adjustable sights.

In any case, never quite as asthetically pleasing visually as a no IL or lug variant, my 617-6's function is unreal. Clearly, the most fun for a few bucks worth of ammo, and I reload cf, I can have at the range!

The old ones cost a premium - to some, that is fine. I like my 4" 10-shot - SS cylinder. Bought new 9/08 for $609. Just pure shooting fun. The key is to just get a 617 now - not later... you'll thank me for that suggestion.

Stainz: While I also prefer the look of the no IL guns, I have used the picture of your 617 as my computer wallpaper for the last couple of months (hope you don't mind). That is a nice looking iron (and pic) you have. I have one just like it sans the wood grips and front site. I'm giving it to myself for Christmas.:D Another 3 weeks before I get to shoot it.
