Just bought a used 617-6 (3-10-16 mfg.) Looked like it had never been cleaned. Don't know what happened with the color but it's is stainless. Does anyone know if I can dry fire this?

Nope can't dry fire a rim fire the firings pin hits on the edge of the cylinder and pings it.

I think some folks use yellow dry wall anchors for dry fire practice. This prevents the firing pin from hitting the cylinder.

Keep a handful of empties and use them when dry firing, or the yellow drywall anchors.

The finish color looks normal, just odd lighting or the background used.

With .22 LR cheap and plentiful again, I suggest lots of trigger time with “wet fire” . Enjoy!

If you do decide to go the yellow plastic drywall anchor route take the time to rotate them so that the firing pin is not striking in the same spot over and over again. Soft plastic is...well...soft. FWIW I make it a point to NEVER EVER allow anyone to dry fire my 617-6 or 17-3. Nope. Not at all. I would suggest you do the same.

I would only do this with Azoom snap caps.I know they say no snap caps needed but to me it is cheap insurance.YMMV.

Take a piece of rubber/plastic, I have used a rubbermaid plastic sheet that is used to put in the bottom of a kitchen sink to protect/cushion dishes that are placed in the sink. Plastic needs to be just the right thickness, cut it to slip down in the hammer channel, right around the firing pin. I used a leather punch to make a hole that will fit around the firing pin. Once this is done, you can dry-fire many, many times, and the hammer will not hit the firing pin so no damage will occur. Of course you need to examine the rubber every so often to make sure that everything is ok.

When you are done dry-firing you will need a small crochet hook to pull the rubber cushion back out of the hammer channel.

Buy a box of size 4-5 drywall anchors and your set for years. They are soft but do take quite the beating before you need to replace them. They generally cost $5/100 and fit perfectly.
I store every .22 I own with the chamber(s) full with them.

Yep. They work. May have to extract and reload them after a lot of dry firing.

Why not just remove the firing pin?
I'm doing this now, after coating all moving parts with polishing compound, accelerating their smoothing in while dry firing!
Of course you have to disassembly and clean the parts afterwards, but hopefully this will do it.
Go to YouTube if necessary for really easy disassembly instructions.

Firing Pin Protrusion?

Does a 617 have enough firing pin protrusion to contact the cylinder rim recess? If it does I don't want one for fear of splitting a rim.

I have dry fired my 617-6 a few times, with no indication of any impact, BUT, I don't make a habit of it. I have more than enough CF revolvers and semi-auto's to dry fire.

Dry fire

I don't make it a practice to dry fire any of my guns but I will dry fire them a few times to check out the action after cleaning or re-assembly. I have 4 S&W and 3 Ruger .22 revolvers and never had cylinder damage on any of them from the firing pin. I have seen some other guys guns with damage but they had modified firing pins or extended aftermarket firing pins.
