Congratulations, Joe! Your revolver is beautiful. I think that the 4 inch Model 624 may just be the ultimate woods bumming or outdoorsman's gun. The only other sixgun that competes is a Model 629 Mountain Gun.

I read about Skeeter Skelton's 4 inch 1950 Target .44 Special about 1974 and thought, I want one of those! I bought a new Highway Patrolman .357 and a new 4 inch S&W .44 caliber barrel and had a gunsmith make me an ersatz 1950 Target. It made me happy but in my heart I knew it was a fraud.

Then, in 1983, S&W introduced brand new 1950 Targets in the form of the Model 24-3. I rejoiced, bought a new 4 incher and sold my older put-together mongrel. The new gun was gorgeous and shot well. It made me happy but in my heart I worried the blue would wear in the holster.

Then, in 1986, S&W reacted to the soreheads who were too sleepy or slow to scoop up one of the limited new Model 24-3's and decided to make more 1950 Targets in stainless steel! I bought mine, serial number AHB9915, for the sum of $310.07 out the door and truly believed that BUFF finally had the world by the tail. Now I don't worry about blue wear and the carbon, smoke rings and leading will never permanently mar this lovely device.

How close is your serial number to mine?
