I have the opportunity to possibly get a 624 no-dash 4" gun. taper bbl and regular wood grips. I was wondering what the approx. value of the gun would be in good condition without the box? how many of these were made? I think I read some time ago that the dallas p.d. issued this model at one time to their patrol officers. true?

any pros or cons (other than its not a magnum) are appreciated.

These tend to go in the $800 range or so as you describe it, depending on its exact condition. There is no mention of production numbers in the latest reference book version but they were only made for 2-3 years. I don't think these were DPD issue but someone here knows for certain.

There was a recall on these for cylinders years ago; the explanation was either bad steel or chambers bored to .44 Magnum length. The factory no longer has replacement cylinders. If you stick to standard .44 Special pressures I suspect it is not an issue.

It's a cool gun and you should buy it if it suits your needs (or wants). Good luck in your decision.

my only hesitation is that it is NOT a magnum and I already have a 629-6 mountain gun. but this a pre-locked gun with the classic cylinder release.

They don't turn up for sale very often, at least not where I shop. If I found another for $800 or less I think I'd have to buy it. I don't think the recall is anything to worry about either; lots of info/opinions on that if you use the search option. Here's one I bought about 20 years ago. Good luck.
