625 4” Heavy Barrel

I read an older article in Guns Magazine and the author referenced his replacement 4” heavy barrel in 45 Colt for his 625 Mountain Gun. Any intel on those barrels? Are they a unicorn?

“ I purchased one of the early stainless Mountain Guns in .45 Colt and was quite pleased with it. So much so, when I saw a used one in a gun shop, I decided to make mine a pair. The only problem was the second version would not shoot at all well. I tried measuring the chamber throats and custom tailoring bullets and checking the cylinder/barrel alignment and … nothing worked. Then as we were carefully examining the inside of the barrel, it appeared there was a very slight bulge.

Contacting Smith & Wesson brought the word there were no more slim Mountain Gun barrels available but they did have 4″ heavy underlug barrels. This sixgun went off to the factory to have the new barrel installed and now it performs exceptionally well.”

That isn't a heavy barrel, that is a full underlug barrel

The one in your image looks like every other model 625 full underlug barrel. For decades they were available in 3" and 4" and 5"

The first model 625 to have a full lug barrel also happens to be the first model 625 that was introduced back in 1988

These were offered on both 625s chambered for the 45ACP cartridge and the 45 Long Colt cartridge.

Either barrel could be installed on your revolver, obviously barrels intended originally for the 45 ACP cartridge would have the wrong caliber marking on them. Additionally they would need to have their barrel extensions trimmed back as the portion of the barrel that extends into the cylinder window is longer on a 45ACP revolver

Several years after discontinuance, remaining barrels were sold off to various parts houses

These days your best bet at finding one would be the online auction sights like eBay
