About 15 to 20 years ago I stumbled upon a 629 classic in 44 mag, 5 inch lugged barrel, hammer mounted firing pin etc... I really like this gun and it shoots great. However.......

I've always lusted for its brother in .45 colt. Any help out there in finding one. I'm not interested in the newer model or the mountain gun. Only the twin to the 629 that I currently have.

Any help would be rewarded and I might even consider a trade.

On a side note; Should I even consider rechambering my 44 to 45 colt? Or would this be a foolish move?

Thanks, Jim

Welcome to the forum scout1!

I also wish I'd bought a 5" FL 625 .45 Colt back in the day. All the ones I saw used were priced considerably higher than similiar 629s then and the price difference is even greater now that the .45 Colts are scarce and the market is glutted with 629s.

You could convert your 5" 629 by having its barrel rebored and rerifled but I think it would be easier to buy a 5" FL .45 ACP barrel. Their caliber marking is not cartridge specific so you wouldn't have to remark one for caliber. Also they are ideal for installing used because their rear end extends further into a frame so when they're installed the wear is cut off the lands when the new forcing cone is reamed. .45 ACP barrels do have GI Joe style rifling with 6 small lands rather than S&W's usual 5 deep grooves but both styles have given me great cast bullet accuracy so I don't think that matters.

It usually makes more sense to sell the revolver you have and pony up the extra money to buy the one you want but your 629 is roughly a $600 gun and its .45 Colt twins bring about a grand and are hard to find.

Best Regards,
Gil

Thanks for the reply k22. I shoot the 629 from time to time and at one time I considered it my "woods gun". Its just that I like the 45 colt cartridge so much better. You know, the usual reasons like it can be loaded for mice or dino's. The woods gun that I find myself carrying the most is a Ruger Blackhawk/Bisley hybrid with a 4 5/8" barrel in 45 colt.

Every so often I'll look around for the 625 from my original post but have yet to find one at any price. DAMN-IT.

Guess I'll keep looking.

There were only 1,500 M-625 .45 Colt Classics made. They have gotten pricey. I sold a NIB one a few months ago for over $1000 and had several offers besides the buyer's.

Frankly, you can download the .44 Magnum to do anything the .45 Colt in a S&W is capable of.

Here's a picture of one to hold you over until you find one!

No, this is Cold!
Just trying to help a fellow forum member out! :)

O.K. Mr. Ice Cold, if you'd taken a shot straight on from the side I'd have a better chance of naming them based on cylinder length but here goes, left to right: .45 Colt, 610 no-dash , 629 and 29. How'd I do?

Very well done k22fan!
And if it's any consolation, the only one I still have in the stable is the 625! Love that gun!
If I run across a good deal on a 625-4 5" .45 ACP I'd probably have to snag it up!

There is one for sale on Gone-broker right now. I have no aspirations of affording it as my pennies are being saved to attend the S.&W. collectors assn. meeting in June.

How badly do you want one? $1000.? $1100.?

Good luck, as you will not be bidding against me.

Yes, I still own them all.

I bought this one new along with the equivalent 5" in .45ACP. Wish I had another pair in 4" !

My shooting partner loves this gun. She finds it does not beat her up like the .44 Mag. :)

I had been looking for one of these for many years. About 4 years ago, I was talking to another vendor at a gun show about this gun. He said he had two. I met him the next weekend at another gun show and bought both of them for $500.00 each. They are both in cherry condition. I will replace this picture with a better one as soon as I can take one outside without a flash. The one on the left is my shooter. The one on the right looks like it has hardly been fired. I can't even find a trace of a cylinder ring. That one stays in the safe. There were only 1500 made, and I was lucky enough to obtain two. Only 1498 left to go. <grin> Good luck in your quest. I am sure you will come upon one.

I just bought a very nice but used 625 in .45ACP. The guy that sold it to me also had a .45 Colt version but it was sold to someone else. I wanted the .45ACP since I had a LOT of that ammo for my 1911.

Allen,

If WFR is ice cold it would take a physicist to name your temperature. I notice however, that your dozen is still short the topic of this thread. Yes, I wrote "your dozen". You will weaken. I confess that to remove the risk to my wallet I had a Model of 1988 barrel installed on my 625-6 Mountain Gun. I know that's not what a good collector would do but I have other big bore 4" N frames with 1950 style tapered barrels and I'm storeing the Mountain Gun barrel so it's reversable.

Allen-Frame,

Love that picture. I own an old M-25 in 4" that I am constantly getting offers on. But I will never sell. I love the .45 colt cartridge. a true classic. I have moved up to a .460 V, but I mostly just shoot the .45 ammo.

Mine is definitely the most accurate 45Colt that I have shot, and that includes some finely tuned SA "cowboy guns. Most of the 625-5's that pop up for sale on the auction sites go for north of $800. We will soon see if one will fetch 1,000. Would I hand mine off for that much?............Hard to say!

Apparently, you need to pony up $1575 for one at the moment. That's what that one went for. Seems pretty steep for one that is not NIB, but this model appears to be gaining a cult following.
