625 Colt

Is there a 625 in .45 Colt. If so, I am interested in one, if they don't have the over-size throats. Do they have them and what are they?

The 625-5 is also in 45lc. If I remember correctly the p&r 25-5 had the problem with the oversized cylinders. Once they moved past the p&r the cylinders were corrected. The 625-5 should all be correct re cylinder size

There were also a few runs of about 1500 each of 5" full lug .45 Colt 625s in the early 90s, light and heavy Hunter PC 625 .45 Colts and the 1st .45 Colt Mountain Gun was a 625-6. They're all in the SCSW.

All .45 Colts made recently enough to have a 3 letter serial prefix have the tighter correct throats.

Thanks good to know. I am thinking of trading my 4" 629 to a 625 since I have my new 5" 29 Classic.
I may put it in the classified, but wasn't sure of the model number.

There are a few of them around and they are great to shoot with standard or heavy loads. Here are a few examples......A -7,The second one is a Model of the 1989, a -7, and a -6 again.....

I've seen pics of 3" 625's in .45LC, what series would that be? Looks like it would make an interesting carry gun if you like big bores. How hard are they to find?

I have a Model 624 with 4" barrel and that is really all the "Mountain Gun" I "need".

However, I believe that I might just "fall off the wagon" if a .45 Colt Mountain Gun presented itself for a reasonable price. NO! NO! NO! --- Oh well, maybe >)).

The .45 Colt (even with the "limited" strength of the S&W's) is a very desirable caliber even for those that really use their handguns. Check out John Linebaugh's take on it:

You have to read the whole article - it is mostly about the Ruger but details a number of big game animals taken by his wife with a .45 Colt at 900 fps. Further, his daily carry is an S&W .45 Colt. You should NOT use "Ruger only" loads in an S&W but a proper bullet (Lyman 454424 or RCBS 45-270-SAA) at reasonable velocities will fill a pick up with deer and elk if you do your job right.

Another question; are all 625 round butts? Also, what is the difference in a 625 Mtn Gun anther another 4" 625?

All 625 are rd butts and the difference is the barrel has a slimmer profile

Top below is a 2001 made 625-7 MG my wife bought new as a gift for me 8/02 - it would be my first-ever S&W. The 1996-vintage 625-6 MG below it was traded for 5/06 in LN condition, save a horrid trigger job. Said trigger job, thankfully just a bent hammer leaf and clipped rebound spring, was easily reversed with some new Wolff springs. Still, the much higher mileage of my first S&W, the 625-7 MG, may have something to do with it, but it certainly has a nicer trigger. MIM is fine in my book. The older MG is my 'range' gun, hopefully extending that original S&W's life.

I have two gripes re the 625MG's. Firstly - all MG's have black/black sights - hard for my 'mature' eyes to pick up. Secondly - the laser-etched barrel markings - "Mountain Gun" & ".45 Colt" - fade with any cleaning - and a metal polish will erase them! Roll imprinting would have been nice. Still, a S&W with 'Colt' emblazoned on it's barrel is neat. And - my first love in revolvers were .45 Colts. Sadly, that first MG chased my others so-chambered away. The second one's arrival spelled death to all of the remainders, .454 SRH, .45 RH, & .45 BH, Bisley, Vaquero, etc, alike. My beloved .45 Colt - and all I have are the pair of MG's and a 24" octagon SS Puma M1892 in it. But - they are all I need. Those MG's have super triggers in DA & SA - and are more accurate than the Rugers they replaced.

If something happened to mine, I'd buy current production examples - if there were any!

I have a 625-11. It's a .45 Colt with scandium alloy frame, stainless steel cylinder, 1 7/8 inch barrel and fixed sights.

I consider it the ultimate snubby and use it as a carry weapon at times. Only 103 of them were made for Lew Horton several years back; they rarely come up for sale.

That's what I'm talking about......Same with me but I do have two .44 mags left.......They sit in the safe a bit while the Long Colts get all the attention........Don't tell though....they will be even harder to come by when people figure it out............
