I'm presently in Afghanistan, DOD Civilian working for the Army. When I return home in June I plan on buying on of the mentioned Revolvers for IDPA competition and CC while Hiking & Hunting. I reload for all three calibers, but due to a theft while on a previous Deployment I only have a selection of TC Contenders left that I use for IHMSA. I would like to shoot Cast Bullets for IDPA but am a little conserened about the leading mentioned by the 625JM shooters, but I like the moon clip option. The difference in Carry Weight
would be about equal between the 625JM & 629 but the 44 Mag might be the better all around cartridge since I could use it as a backup during Deer Season. The 686SSR in 357 Mag would be a few penny's cheaper to reload and place me in the SSR class in IDPA. At 60 years old I have no intentions of trying to be any kind of State or National Champ in IDPA competition I just want to have FUN and get the most out of my
purchase.

Thanks
Rick

At 60 don't you think you're a little old to be playing in the sandbox?

Thanks you for your service! I wouldn't worry about leading. You can find good products to clean lead.

Rick, welcome to the forum.

Of the three you mention, the 686 will be the easiest to conceal and carry of the three. And I am an N frame fan who carries them concealed much of the time.

OTOH, the 625JM is an IDPA animal and pretty much the standard in ESR. It can probably take hotter handloads than any 1911 ever could.

OTOH, the 629 will serve you best in the field, can be carried concealed (see my thread about that in the CCW subforum), can be shot in SSR with Safariland speedloaders if you mind the weight, or you can have the cylinder cut for moonclips and shoot it in ESR. If you have the cylinder milled for clips, rimmed cartridges like the .44s will still headspace on the rim so you can use speedloaders in the field or on the street if you prefer and then switch to clips for competition or stay with moons all the time.

Sounds like you need one of these:

If you reload, I would get the new SSR. Brass is easy to find along with the other supply's.
