625 Question

My latest S&W purchase arrived today, a 625-3 with a 4" barrel:

My question regards the barrel as it is not marked "Model of 1989" like the other 625-3 revolvers I've seen. Think the barrel has been changed? As you can see the front sight and the cylinder latch knob are not original. I don't really care as I got it home for a total cost of $727.00 and change counting shipping, transfer fee and cost of a money order and bought it for shootin' not collecting, just curious.

Can't help you with the barrel question, but that's one fine looking gun!

I think you are right and that is not the original barrel for a -3. But as long as it was installed properly I wouldn't worry about it.

They made a 4" 625-3. The product code was 100925. I've seen way more 3-inchers, though.

Sure looks like a later barrel to me.
The Jerry Miculek guns have the same pattern.
Pin for front sight is way forward from my 4" -3.
Also looks like your barrel is roll-marked whereas my -3 has the very light laser printing.

I would imagine that you have sombody's former IDPA ESR Division gun. Definitely a later barrel with the DX frt sight base. The cylinder release looks like a slightly massaged California Competition Works release. Width reduced and rounded to comply with the rules. I would bet that it has had a spring change too. With the .45 being the low pressure round that it is, the gun will last forever. You may have to do some minor maintenance on it, but it was a nice score.

Were all the 625-3's 45ACP or were some 45 Colt? I saw one this weekend at the gun show that said 45 Colt on the 4" barrel & had a -3 (very lightly) stamped on the yoke? I thought certain 625 dash models were 45 Colt only? Were some both?
