627 PC vs 686 Plus PC

trying to decide, 8 shots vs 7. 43 vs 39 oz, N frame, non-vented, normal cylinder vs L frame, vented, smooth cylinder. Main use is target, range, and home defense. Not a hunter, not competing. Currently have a model 18 4 inch, 642, and model 19 2.5. Would like to have something with at least 4 inch barrel ( 5 even better, not a carry piece) and more weight to handle 357 recoil, and maybe less flash bang and recoil than my 2.5 inch model 19. With heavily loads its sure puts on a show, but that's not great for SD (insanely load, giant flash. lots of recoil). I like 7 and 6 rounds even better, and the wood grips sure look nice. Leaning towards 627 PC. Now what you say? What would drive your selection?

There are a couple of N frames that interest me, but they just don't fit my hand.
L's are just right for me.

I'm struggling between a nice 6 shot K frame that'll eat anything and is a bit heavy, and an N frame that's an 8 shot, light, but is kind of of ammo sensitive (327).

Everything is a trade off as they say. It all comes down to where it'll work. For carry, weight matters to me.

So it is hard to tell exactly which of the Model 627 Performance Center revolver you are quoting the weights on

The 5" Model 627 is the way to go for target shooting

The 627 V-comp is a but heavier than the other two and the comp can be removed and a false muzzle mounted in it's place

As for something around the house, I prefer the Model 327. Here is a 327 TRR8. Thanks to the Scandium alloy frame it maneuvers around the house much like a K-frame even thought you have eight rounds of N-frame goodness in your hands

Since the Model 357 family of revolvers use a tensioned barrel system similar to the legendary Dan Wesson revolvers of yesteryear, the 327 TRR8 is astonishingly accurate

I really like my 627 Pro Series.

I was at the same crossroads a few years ago. Already having a 686-4 plus and gaining an extra round was worth a few more ounces, I went with the 627-5. Besides being nice looking, I think it's great for home protection and carry.

FYI: I had the cylinder, ejector rod and latch black nitrided and added the fixed rear sight.

I've been wanting a 5" 627 for the past year or so but I can't find one in a store or at a show that I can examine before buying.
Yes I can easily order one but no way will I buy one sight unseen.
Seen way to many canted barrels and gigantic cylinder gaps on other revolvers to do that .

The barrel on mine is slightly canted. Bolted on a Fastfire III so it's not an issue.

other than my model 18 (22 lr, 4 inch), my other revolvers are snubbies. I want get something at least 4 inch to get the most of out of a 357, and less flash and noise than my model 19 2.5 inch. I also like the idea of 7 or 8 rounds. This will not be used to carry, I can't imagine carrying a 40 ounce brick, except maybe in a hunting situation (I don't hunt). In this case a 5 inch barrel would add more sight radius and more power. I have shot some 6 inch barrels, but the seem so end heavy and tire me out while aiming. After a few cylinders the get tiring. I love, love my model 19 2.5 and would never sell that, but at 32 ounce self defense 357s are very ubrupt, with high recoil, flash and LOUD. I accidentally shot one round at a private indoor range without my hearing protection, OMG could not hear for about 1/2 day. So looking to step up to a 7/8 round and 4 plus inch barrel. I have a good gunsmith that can really slick up a revolver for less than 200. If I go for a PC model, would aready be done at the factory. So I guess the real question is 7 shot L frame or 8 shot N?

Honestly, the problem with the PC guns is how incredibly ugly they are. I had a 625 PC, which is not as bad as the 629 or 627, but I just couldn't warm up to it.

If they made a more traditional looking 3" barrel 627, there's no question I'd carry one before I bought a 686. Heck, before I bought a 3" 627 I'd get a 2.5" 629 to match my 3", 4", and 6" 44s.

That said, I find the L frame awkward and prefer an N frame. In my hand, L frames feel like a humpback K frame.

FWIW, I pocket carry a 357 Mag every day - it's a Kimber K6S. If I wanted a 7 shot 357 to belt carry, I'd get a GP100.

For about the last year or two they have offered 7-shot 357s and 327s as well as 5-shot 44 SPLs.
