by the way do you need a sight tool to take of the front and rear sights to replace them with night sights??? any one know...

Jack,

You are gonna dig it man. Got mine about a week ago, same price you paid too. Took it out Tuesday and ran a couple hundred, mixed loads, down the pipe. It is a VERY accurate Smith.

Happy Shooting, I think you will enjoy it. I do mine but...get some wood on that thang man, them rubbers are for...well you know what rubbers are for

You got one *NEW* for $700?

Are gun prices in NC really almost *half* what they are in CA?

I'm in the middle of the 10-day waiting period on mine, I got it used, and I paid a tad more than you. And for my region, mine was a bargain.

Hell, even on GunBroker they're running more than $700 used...

How'd you swing that?

o_O

Anyways, jealousy aside, I'm very happy for you... Right on about the trigger - I could NOT believe how smooth the pull was when I dry fried through the cylinders. I hope you enjoy yours as much as I *know* I'll enjoy mine

That is a fantastic revolver, enjoy it. Somehow though, I can't bring myself to buy a brand new Smith as long as there's a model 28 4 screw from 1959 waiting for me to pay it off

.

Maybe I'll come around someday. I'll bet you guys know something I don't .

Regards ,,,Al , , Wow ,Just noticed this was my 500th. post.

SmithAndJohnson,
My gundealer has realy good prices..he had a 686SSR for $699...he just sold a Lew Horton 25-14 for 725...so he has good prices and an even better distributor.....I lived in CA while I was in the military..I do not know why any one whould want to live in KOMIFORNIA.....cost of living in NC is 1/3 the price of CA. I can buy a gun the same day I pay for it. and I dont have a list of what I can and can not buy....and to top it off...I CAN CARRY CONCEALED.....

Those aren't good, they're downright robbery!!!
I lived in CA while I was in the military..I do not know why any one whould want to live in KOMIFORNIA.....
I'm trying desperately to restrain myself from replying to your full PRK comment, as this forum is about loving S&Ws, not hating your fellow countrymen. But I can't resist arguing just one thing:
cost of living in NC is 1/3 the price of CA.
Using an oversimplified view of the way the market works, this implies that roughly 3 times as many people want to live in California

Besides, my job pays plenty well enough to live here comfortably, and I couldn't find work in my field in most other states. I'm jealous you picked up a 627 PC new for less than I did used, but I can afford it just fine, and I'll be thinking of you on the range next week. =D

Congrats again!

Just a little clarification in order (I think). The 627 above is the same one I have and it is NOT a PC gun. It is the Pro Series, not Performance Center. Those are in the $1100.00 rang, I just can't figure out why though. I looked at them before I got the Pro, SAME GUN imo, except for 5" and bead sight and PC rollmark. Seemed a bit steep for an additional $400.00. SAME GUN but the 4" is much handier.

But it is not the PC version.

SmithandJohnson: I think there are two 627 Pro guns: a performance center 5" and the less expensive 4". Both are moonclip capable. Then there's the standard but probably not moon capable gun. Maybe the two of you are talking about different Pros? Just a thought.

Okay, well, this entire time I *have* been confused. I'm waiting to pick up my 5" PC gun.

Is the 627Pro this one? If not, does the 627Pro show up on S&W's website at all?

I've never heard of "Pro" as a suffix for any model until now...

EDIT: No, the submitter's picture has the barrel style matching the 5" PC gun, not the 4" "naked 627" model. But it does seem to be a shorter version of the PC model... what is this "pro" model?
/me is confused

Smith,

The Pro IS on the Smith site (do a search for Pro SEries). And the profile is identical, just that the PC gun is 5" with gold bead and the Pro is 4" with R/R, W/O. Yeahh, it is confusing (what is not about Smith these days
icon_smile.gif
).

The "Pro" series, as I understand it, came about due to SSR (Stock Service Revolver) competition in IDPA. Started with the 686 Pro 4", which also has the same profile.* That one is limited to 6, as that is the IDPA rule on wheelies. Not sure how the 627 Pro fits in (I don't shoot IDPA) for that rule.

What I do know is that it is an AWESOME carry gun if you can handle N weights. Those 2 extra "sneeker" rounds are what sold me over just packing a Mod 28 or 27 as I sometimes do. And...if they had made the 686 Pro, in 7 shot, I probably would have bought that one too.

But neither is from the PC.

* regarding barrel profile. I first saw this about 2 years ago in Handgunner mag where SDM had machined a 686 no lock to this profile, did action and other work, and polished the flutes. Instant "woodie" and I usually don't get all worked up by gun porn. I think that is where Smith got the idea imo as it was well before the Pro series got started. Others may know more than I on this topic.

You will LOVE the PC version too I'll bet. But, not to pop a bubble, the trigger on my 627 is every bit as sweet as ANY SMith I have shot to date, and I have been packing them for about 25 years now. They got this one right. Now, if they will just get rid of that danged hole in the side, I'll say all is right with the world again.

Beautiful! Now wait though. Is S&W coming out with a different line of 4" 627's? Or is the PRO series the only ones? Thanks.

.357magger,

I don't disbelieve you, but I must be doing something stupid, as all the 627s I can find are here and that includes the only 4" I can find which is here.

Do you have a URL handy?

This certainly explains the confusion!

I've got one on order, and am impatiently waiting for it. Thanks for this post panamajack. I was torn between the newly announced standard 627 4" and the "un-announced" 627 4" Pro Series. Decided on the Pro for about $30 more than the standard.

There seems to be some confusion with the new 4" 627's. S&W has the standard 4" 627 (#163357) on the web site, with a standard type barrel. I believe the Pro series started with the 686, which is only found in their press release section, with no mention of the 627. The Pro series 627 (#178014) has a shorter version of the 5" PC barrel. The only other difference I can find is a lack of a ball detent on the Pro.

panamajack; In regard to your night sight question: I've used Meprolight night sights on several other S&W's and really like them. To install the front you have to knock out the red insert material and replace it with the night sight insert supplied. The rear sight blade is replaced by the night blade, and a new screw for this is supplied with the set. For me these give a better sight picture, with more room on each side of the front sight when you've got a sight picture. And the glowing dots light up very well. You can kind of see it on my 686.
