627 pro series questions

so im selling a gun and saved alittle and now this gun seems to be in my price range. im gona be searching online. any hints? ive found them on gunbroker between $800 and $950. what is a reasonable deal on this gun

I paid full retail for mine new last year here in SoCal. It was the only one I had ever seen (still the only one I have ever seen) so I didn't hesitate to buy it.

Paid $800 for mine about 5 years ago. With tax, the plug, and Ahrends, I quickly had over $900 in it. You may find a bit of a better deal on a used one. I'd try to pay a max of $850 if I were buying one today.

That sounds about right...paid $830 for mine plus another $245 to my gunsmith.

I keep hearing about "The Plug"....where are you guys finding these and does it take a gunsmith to install ??

I love my R Grizzle Georgia Snap OWB.

Just because I can...

Here's mine. Swapped on a set of fixed 3-dot Cylinder & Slide sights, an 'old' style cylinder release, and stippled the back strap to give just a bit more traction with the smooth grips. I use both holsters for CCW with this thing on a pretty regular basis. I'll admit, I'm not a huge Smith guy, but I really like this revolver!

I like mine too. I've had some QC problems when I bought her. I opened her up to see WHY the DA pull was north of 15 lbs. When I got into it, I found that there was a large burr (chunk of slag left by the MIM process?) on the rebound slide. I dressed it down with a smooth stone and 2400 grit paper. It was also very dry, so a liberal coating of 3-in-1 oil made things better.

Under dry firing, the trigger would seize and hang up, refusing to advance the cylinder. In a fit of disgust, I sent it off to Denny Reichart at Sand Burr Gun Ranch (Indiana). He had it for 3- months. It gave him fits as well. There was a considerable amount of things that plagued her. The DA sear was too long and had to be trimmed back to spec, so it wouldn't interfere with the DA operation. The insides were as rough as a cob. He dressed them down to make it as friction free as possible.

Upon receiving it back from Sand Burr, I shot about 150 rounds of Remington Golden Saber .38 +P without any issues. Last week, I shot her again with Speer Blazer Brass .357 Magnum 158gr ammo. I had 80% FTFs with this and some Remington 125gr Magnums.

When I got home, I thoroughly cleaned the piece and replaced the "bossed" mainspring (AKA: Wolff Reduced Power mainspring) with a legacy S&W unit. The DA pull (I don't shoot SA) went up from 9.5 lbs to 12 lbs with the spring. I should also say that she had from the onset of me owning her, a Cylinder and Slide extra-length firing pin.

I have yet to re-shoot her with the mainspring modifications. I hate to think what it would have been like without Denny's expert intervention.

With that said, I love the gun! Up until last week, it was my "house gun" with TK moons loaded with the Golden Saber .38 Special +Ps. Until I ascertain her reliability, she's "off the job".

I have done a few things to her prior to and after receiving her back from Sand Burr. The front sight is a Trijicon unit from Dawson Precision, the Combat trigger modification was done by Mag-Na-Port with the hammer done by Denny to match. It also has the V-notch S&W .160 rear sight blade. I routinely change out the S&W cylinder releases with the SDM units for better purchase. The Herrett's Trooper stocks in burled Walnut complete it out.

She's very accurate and will give yeoman service as a duty piece or as a 'fun' gun. I like them, but take issue with the QC fail that S&W should've caught. In a Six Sigma industry, this gun shouldn't have left Springfield with the 'warts' she exhibited when I got her. These issues have been for the most part rectified. The heavy trigger pull and resultant hammer fall SHOULD light off any primer.

There are two flavors of the 627-5: The Pro Series and PC version. The PC version allegedly has some extra attention paid to it. I wish I would've gotten the PC version. I've spent as much money in repairs/modifications that would have offset the difference in price between the two lines.

I don't want to sound like I don't like them, but be prepared to explore the possibility of send it back to make it perfect. Just my $.02 worth of experience. I hope your experience will be vastly different.

Why didn't you just send it back to Smith & Wesson?

Wow ! Sorry "gtoppcop"to hear you had QC problems with your 627

I purchased mine last month...put about 100 rounds through it with no problems and gave it to my gunsmith to do his magic. Action job with wolff springs and extended firing pin...HiViz front sight and a set of JM grips. The trigger in DA is silky smooth and in SA it's unbelievable. I have since fired about 5 to 600 rounds of hand loads and Remington factory ammo with no miss fires. In fact I just shot it in a match this last weekend...took one stage...placed second in another and took 4th overall and was the only revolver shooter in the match.

I guess I got a good one or my gunny really took care of me...maybe a little of both but I really like my 627 PS.

Paul,

I didn't want to seem to be an in-grate. I already had another gun there at S&W.

I really appreciate their CS (I wrote about it previously) staff and didn't want to seem like "that guy".

The gun is a keeper (now). I also had a TRR8 which I liked very much too. I just wish that they would've made a 4-inch TRR8.

The grips are Herretts Troopers.

All,

Sure enough. The change of the "Bossed Mainspring" to a legacy S&W mainspring was more than sufficient. I took it out to the range yesterday. She gobbled up and spat out several varieties of .357 Magnum and .38 +P without a hiccup.

Although the DA trigger is heavier (albeit smooth), it is now 100% reliable, especially for a piece that is designed to save your bacon.

The Speer Blazer Brass is pretty good ammo for the price (I have 3200 rounds of it), but its primers are hard. The 627 with the new (old) spring cratered the primers. With that said, she will light off any round.

I'm happy.

I recently acquired a 627 pro & couldn't be happier. Shot it in this months USPSA match. While I didn't great, it was my fault- not the gun's.
I did get some of George's moonclips from Revolver supply co (a great guy to do business with) and found Remington & federal brass works pretty good in the .025 sized moonclips.
Decided to try some Long colt or short colt brass, and am looking for some recepies along with the sturdier moonclips designed for the starline brass I'll get.

Good luck- I'm satisfied with the 627 pro.

I decided before i go to the range to load the moon clips. The gun came with 30+ s&w brand moonclips....I loaded Remington brass really easy. Some armscor and magtech 357 and 38 special loaded extreme hard every few rounds.

My question never got asked with above post. Does anyone know what the s&w thickness is of their moonclips or do the very and why does the 1/100th to 1/1000th or whatever difference matter?

Don't know about thickness of factory moon clips but do know that the dimensions of the extraction grooves on brass vary from brand to brand, so moon clips come in varying thicknesses to best fit ones brand of choice.
