Inherited these two revolvers when my dad passed. Trying to get any information on them and when the were manufactured.

The top one is a 629-1 44Mag, 3" barrel. SN ALC9985

Botton on is a 610 10mm 5" barrel. SN BFN1230

Appreciate any help.

I'm a FAN!

Smarter person than me will be along shortly to help fill in some blanks...

I have a 629-1 like yours with serial AJPxxxx dates to 1986. I got this info from someone else who had their 629-1 lettered...
For your 629-1
It is one of 8000 made in 86-87 with round butt and 3 inch barrel. It was jointly distributed by Lew Horton and Smith and Wesson. It came with shrouded ejector rod, a .375 semi-target hammer, a .265 smooth trigger and grooved backstrap/forestrap. Red ramp front sight with white outline micrometer click rear sight. I don't have a box so I can't tell you the product code. S&W customer service may be of help with that.

For your 610
The box label on mine has a Spec Ord of 0123 which I believe puts it (shipped?) on the 123rd day of 1990. Your 610 may have a 5 inch barrel which would be the first 610 I've seen with a 5 inch barrel. The product code for a 5 inch barreled 610 is 103578...measured from the front(muzzle end) of the cylinder to the tip of the muzzle end of the barrel.

From my perspective, you have two very nice and highly desirable N frame, Stainless Steel revolvers. As shown in your photos with no boxes, tools or paperwork, I believe they are worth at least $1,500.00 each and if you intend to sell, someone here on the forum may be interested.

FYI...

If you have boxes, they make your revolvers much more desirable to collectors. Search high and low for them if possible.

Decoding the "features" from the label on my 610 box S=Stainless, RB=Round Butt, F/L=Full Underlug, Semi Tar=? (maybe semi target hammer, or semi target trigger) CS=Combat Stocks which my label does not indicate but is configured as I bought the revolver "used".

The $1.5k value is what they go for in my area without any accessories. In my opinion, that is on the lower end of an estimated value. With boxes, tools and paperwork, and if listed on one of the big auction sights with a known seller of collectables, they could potentially see a hammer price over $2k each. After paying auction fees and seller fees on the big auction sites, you would optimistically see around 80 percent of the hammered price.

You are one lucky dog. Both are outstanding guns. I once had a 629-1 'Backpacker'... stupidly I sold it. I think it was a 'Lew Horton'.

Both are very highly desirable S&Ws!

My dad had pretty large collection of firearms mostly 1911's and lever actions. I don't know much about the S&W revolvers but these two caught my interest. Unfortunately, we didn't find any boxes or paperwork on either of these two. Will have to do more digging. Appreciate all your insight on this.

very nice revolvers. I own both myself. The 610 5" is not rare, but more uncommon than the 3" 629-1. You can order moon clips for it online if you have plans of shooting it.. You can also shoot .40 S&W in it as well. Product code on my 610 is 103578. Spec Order 0108 with a BFA serial number prefix.

Send an email to Mrs Susan Lorusso for Lew Horton information. She will tell you for free if your 629-1 is a Lew Horton gun. Then if it is, for a small fee will send you a historical letter on it. Contact her at

I have a Lew Horton 629-1 from March of 1986. Yours is probably earlier than it. Here is a photo of my gun and the letter I received from Earl back in 2014. Good Luck!

RogerA,

Thank you for the info. I will definitely email her. You have a really nice revolver as well. I will follow back up once I hear back from her.

Thanks again,

I think the Lew Horton estimates are a bit high. I’ve been monitoring them lately and don’t see many actual $1500 sales. Some guys ask much more but they don’t sell. I’m referring specifically to the 2 1/2” and 3”.

RogerA,

Susan immediately replied to my email and confirmed it is a Lew Horton Special Edition and is one of 1200 produced in 1986.

I'm going to to request a letter of authenticity.

Thanks again for the information.

The 3” 629-1 with the ALC serial number prefix is most likely a Lew Horton gun. $1500 to $1700 value.

I have two 3” 629-1, both with ANCXXXX numbers, both Lew Horton’s. One is complete with box, tools and dox. I turned down an offer of $2k.

My gun was purchased new by a doctor’s wife, for him to carry fly fishing in bear country. I guess she was protecting her investments. I bought it from the local gun shop when he sold several nice guns because of non use. It was carried, seldom fired, and in great condition. I’ve owned it since 2014. Mine is not for sale. I’ve been offered $1500 and $1700,. That was my reason for placing the value as such. Let me repeat, MINE IS NOT FOR SALE.

Think @ 1500-1700$ either of those would not last long around anyone whose is actively "on the scout" for one.Don't know about a "cost conscious shopper".
