629-1 pinned but not recessed

Recently obtained a 6" 629 which has a 1 (no dash line -) in what appears to be a little different font and has a pinned barrel but not a recessed cylinder. Couldn't find a thread on this combination. Only info I have seen was pinned and recessed usually found together. Also trying to determine if this is truly a dash 1 model. Anyone have any experience with a 629 like this?

My 629-1 is neither pinned or recessed. I would have sworn it was pinned, but here it is:

The 629-1 engineering change deleted the pinned barrel and recessed cylinder, in theory.

There are "transitional" model 629s with one feature or the other (usually just the older style cylinder), so my guess is your gun was assembled early in the -1 era but the frame started out stamped 629 and the 1 added. Interesting gun.
 
I was under the impression that dropping the barrel pin did not necessitate an engineering change, and those guns continued to be stamped as 629, without a dash.

When the recessed cylinders were discontinued, this did necessitate an engineering change, and those guns were then stamped 629-1.

I may be wrong about this so if anyone knows the true facts about these transition guns, I would welcome to be corrected.

The -1 change in 1982 involved both the pin and the counterbored cylinder. This was consistent on all K and N frames for that year, although the dash number was different for various models. Of course, non-magnum centerfire revolvers never did have the counterbored cylinders.
 
Thanks Jack. In my second paragraph above, I meant to say, "when the recessed cylinders were discontinued" (not adopted). I made the correction in my original post.
 
For what it's worth, I have a no dash not pinned, but recessed. It is a transition gun, but if you have a - anything I am not surprised it has pinned or recessed that makes more sense as they were using up parts.

Mine like I said is a no dash. Why would you not change it to a dash 1 I don't know. It is a unicorn.

No, only the counterbored cylinder.
Of course, non-magnum centerfire revolvers never did have the counterbored cylinders.
and even though the barrel pin disappeared in 1982, there was no new dash number on models like the 10, 14, 15, 17, 18, 25, 64, 67, etc. until 1988 with the new yoke and floating hand.
 
Fwiw, a friend of mine said he sent his model 66 which was pinned and recessed in for a repair unrelated to the cylinder and, when it came back, the cylinder had been replaced with a non relieved cylinder which he was very disappointed about….and of course it was still pinned. I think that maybe some low life was snatching cylinders for their collectible value resale as some many people had a t u r d in their mouth over the change from recess to non-recessed, and offering them for sale on the after market. Basically stealing. This was about 20 years ago and only speculation by me. Cheers.

I watched a video on Youtube on a pre model 29 that was having trouble. They sent back to Smith. He got it back with a modern cylinder and his original as well. No way I would be OK with that.
