There is a 629-1 for sale locally. It has Hogue grips with a matte stainless finish and night sights. It has been magnaported and has a 3" barrel. Can't really ID it. I have a couple of 629's in 3" but no night sights and a brighter ss finish. I like the gun but not sure of what it is?

629

How long is the ejector rod?

What you may have is a Magnaport Combat mini. This is a conversion that magnaport makes with a supplied gun. Depending on when and what was done to it, it is about a $600-$800 conversion before you add the cost of the initial 629.

Wow. Does not look like that. LOL. I kinda like yours. But it is a good looking gun. Matte stainless though. It is fluted.

629

The good book says 629-1 should be a Combat Magnum 1 of 5000 (or 8000 depending on where you read) 3" round butts dist. by Lew Horton product code 103610.

Depending on the serial number prefix, its probably fair to assume you have one of these that the previous owner magnaported and changed the sights on.

AWC serial #. Horton would of had Combat grips I think but could have been replaced.

Price is $850???????

Wow, that sure seems pretty high to me, especially as the revolver has Hogue rubber grips on it.

I'm sure it left the factory with wood grips; almost certainly the N frame, round butt finger grooved 'combat' grips.

Gun was ordered by Ron Shirk. 1 of 250. Think they put night sights on it and had magnaported. Spoke to Ron and Jeff and they remember ordering 250 but don't recall details and no longer have records from 95' back.

Ron Shirk is a wholesale firearms distributor located north of Lebanon, Pennsylvania. Ron's a fairly big player in the industry and although I don't get to his shop as often as I used to, I never knew him to commission a special run of a gun. But I could be wrong.

Ron is an American success story. While a police officer in the city of Lebanon, he obtained an FFL in order to save money on his shooting supplies. It wasn't long before other officers began ordering things from him and with $300 starting capital and his hunting cabin, he started Ron Shirk's Shooting Supplies as a retail gun shop and soon started selling to other dealers as well. Health concerns caused him to cease retail operations sometime in the 1980s. Today, he is a legitimate millionaire and owns numerous farms in Lebanon County as well as the firearms business.

I met Ron in 1972 as a gun shop customer and he became a customer for many years at the Chevrolet dealership where I worked. He bought his first vehicle from us in 1978 - a Caprice station wagon for his wife.

Dang... VERY interesting! Not saying I'd shoot full house .44 magnums out of it but I'd sure love to shoot my pet 240gr SWC/1000 fps loads I use in my 629-1 4 incher out of it.

Looks like a mighty handy little cannon.

And yes I'd get wood grips. Wood and steel. Rubber is for Glocks.

The previous owner of my 610 also had night sights added. Still trying to decide if I like them. The ramp just looks funny to me.

I like it just how it is, rubber grips and all. That night site... is it tritium ? I sure liked the tritium mortar sites I used in the Infantry - always "on", no batteries required. C.W.
