I friend sent me an email about a Classic DX he bought. Below is a part of it.
I purchased a 629-3 Classic DX, 5" BBL, LNIB with all the goodies and factory test target. From what I've read, the 5" DX's are fairly low production because they were only made for one year; introduced in 1992 and discontinued in 1993. When I looked at the SCoSW, the serial number coincides with Jan-Feb 1992, and the factory test target is marked Jan 14, 1992. However, when I emailed S&W to get a ship date for the serial number, they came back with October, 28 1998.
My box has two labels on it, the "standard" white label on one end and a yellow label on the other. My speculation is the gun was manufactured in 1992, sat in their warehouse until 1998, and the yellow label was affixed for inventory purposes or ??. I've searched the Smith forums with no luck, and no response from S&W when I emailed them about it.
So, I'm trying to find information about this yellow label. Have you ever seen one of these labels or know anything about them? Have you ran across a "late shipped" gun from S&W and did it have a yellow label on it?
