Greetings friends,

So I took a chance last week and bought a 629-4 double magna port. I'm not exactly sure what I have here. I called S&W and gave them the serial number and they said the SKU was 170058. The serial number is FPC00XX. There was a thread back in 2009 on here
http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...had-trouble-post978603.html?88977=#post978603

That thread listed the 170058 as the Avenger but with Rosewood Stocks and an unfluted barrel.

My 170058 has a fluted barrel and rubber grips.

The SCSW 4th doesn't list much info. It says 170058 3" Double Magna Ported on page 311. On page 309, it lists "The Avenger: 3" quadra ported, rosewood stocks, 151 manufactured.

SO.....I'm putting it back out here to see what the collective thinks. I'll probably get it lettered by Mr. Jinks but its also fun to see what everyone thinks. I'm happy with whatever it is. I'm a 44 mag fan!

Thanks in advance for any info or commentary.

All the best and have a great weekend!

That one has a fluted cylinder, as well as the barrel. The quad ported ones actually work pretty well to reduce muzzle flip because the first ports are about 1/2 way down the barrel. There is plenty of high pressure behind the bullet to work those ports and the next ones. It catches the muzzle rise early in the cycle. Should be a great shooter.

I just found in the SCSW 4th on page 453 the following:

Model 629-4: The Avenger
Caliber- .44 Magnum: 3" quadraport barrel, Lew Horton, rosewood Badger stocks with diamond shaped inlay on right panel, has been reported as both fluted and unfluted cylinder. 151 units, s/n FPC0001-FPC0150 + FPC0153. Product code: 170058 151 Manufactured

Looks like you do have an Avenger, the serial prefix does match. I do believe that it's also been called a Backpacker. Which you may find out if you were to get it lettered. The Standard Catalog has great info but when it comes to PC, some things are just references. A lot of the PC material wasn't documented well and it's hard to say what was exact for even gun that came out of there. I have seen the Avenger with those same black rubber Hogues, like the ones yours is wearing. Though they won't be original, Badger still makes the rosewood grips and you can customize them to have the diamond inlay.

N-Frame Round Full Grip — Badger Custom Grips

It truly is a wonderful revolver, enjoy.

Yeah, I guess you can say I found the info. Some of it on this forum, some from google searches and a little from watching auctions and talking to others who have own the revolver themselves.

excellent, I had a bit of a hard time finding much on this model during a purchase. And was able to get a Lew Horton Letter from a formal Operation Officer at Lew Horton. She is still able to get info and send out letters.

Good to hear that you're getting the info you where looking for. If not, keep searching and asking around. I did own one a few years back, that's what drove me to find out more info about it. This forum may be the best spot to rather more info if needed.
