Picked up this used 629-5 w/box at LGS two days ago. Probably paid too much at $800 but functionally it checked out 100% and had great cosmetics. Judging by the recoil shield it's definitely been shot some however lock up is tight with zero end play and timing/carry up are perfect. Cleaned and removed the side plate. I was surprised by how clean it was inside for a 25 year old revolver so I just wiped it down lightly, added a few drops of oil, buttoned it up and took it to the range. Shot POA. Trigger is a crisp 3.5 lbs in S/A. D/A is more like 12 lbs. but smooth. Very comfortable to shoot a mix of factory .44 Special and Magnums.

$800 is a good buy. I've seen them go for a lot more. Not unheard of to spend $1000+, which I have on a couple of my -5s depending on whether they're a PC or not. Last -5 I bought was a 6". Paid $900 off Gunbroker. It was absolutely filthy, fully functional but filthy and this was bought from a gun shop. Once I cleaned it up, good to go.

"Paid too much at $800", PFFFFT. That was a great score. It's good to hear you're already out there enjoying it. That's a perfect length full lug barrel for recoil and won't tire you out like the the full lug 8 3/8"er will. Congrats.

Paid too much? Nah! I paid more than that for a five inch -5 that must have been stored in the grit under the seat of a work truck.

You did OK.

That recoil shield does look like someone put some hot .44s through it. Still great buy for $800.
Yeah, the cartridge imprints on the recoil shield made me pause, but lock up is perfect on all cylinders with zero end shake and carry up & timing are spot on. Barrel extension and forcing cone also looks real good with no erosion and no flame cutting on the top strap so I took the chance.

I don't think $800 is too much for that revolver, at least in this economy. That 629-5 is more like a $1000 revolver.

Fantastic gun you're going to love it. It will be difficult to find a load that does NOT shoot accurately in that gun. The recoil shield, IMO that's what a 44 is supposed to look like. Great buy.

VERY nice....

Last summer found a 629-5 5" not just LNIB but it only had the three smoke rings on the cylinder... Was made in 2001 and apparently just became a safe queen...

Pulled the sideplate off and polished the rebound slide and put in a 13# trigger return spring and lighter weight mainspring... Didn't get around to shooting it till just a few weeks ago...shot great but had some light strikes DA so a new mainspring is in order...

Great shooting guns...Bob

I'd buy that every day and twice on Sunday for $800 , nice score !
The 629 classic is my favorite.44 mag. to shoot.

Nice buy for $800! Out of all the 44 magnums I have owned my 6.5" 629-5 Classic is my favorite! Was $525 new in 2000. Is easily the most accurate 44 revolver I have ever owned.

Just saw a 6" on gunbroker, starting bid was $1250. That's a bit high, but not uncommon if it were a PC model.
