LGS has a 629-5 with 6 1/2" barrel in approx. 90+% condition with box but no papers. It checks out functionally. Excellent carry up and trigger but with a .010"-.012" side to side B/C gap. Good forcing cone. Cosmetics are very good with no blemishes on the frame, cylinder or barrel, but it does need a good cleaning and has some light handling marks on the front of the muzzle, but not near the crown. It would be a range toy only, not collectible.

Asking price is $850. Is this high, low, fair?

Serial # is CDM2501. I'm guessing made late 90's '97-'99?

Not sure if I should pass or wait for better example.

I think it’s a fair price. Here’s mine, the power port version.

Decent price....

Last summer I picked up an unfired in the box 629-5 Classic 5" at a big shop in Connecticut. Had been looking for a 5" Classic and most had been over a grand if in decent shape...this one was $900 and gladly paid it. Was made in 2001 just before the IL started...

I'd tell you how it shoots but it is still unfired..should cure that soon...

Handle it, if you like it go for it!
I have sold off all my long barrel guns. I now only own 4 and 5 inch barreled revolvers

I would pass on that one and look for a tighter B/C gap like 4-6 thousands. I had a 629 with a .010 and was not happy with it. I sold it at a loss and found a 29-3 4" gaping .004; Better than paying for a bbl set back job.

Almost any pre lock S&W is worth $800. That’s what I would offer.

I generally agree but my threshold of $$ pain is a bit higher :-) I bought a -5 five inch "Truck Gun" which I cleaned up pretty nicely though all of the "engraving' is gone.

My other is a 6 inch ported -4 that I gave what many would call silly dollars for but I'm not sorry.

Thanks all. I'm passing. Reason is I called S&W customer service to get manufacture/shipping date. It was as I thought 1999. However, when the rep asked my name he asked if I purchased the gun used. I replied, Yes, (even though it's still at the LGS). He said OK because this gun was sent in to us for repair in 2022. I asked what for as that would be helpful and he replied "Barrel to frame fit adjusted". That could be an indication of why the B/C gap was .012" on the right side and .0095 on the left. Also made me wonder why the gun was being sold if the original owner only had it back a year. Glad I called.
