I have been looking for a 4 inch 629 for about a year. The search ended Saturday and I will post pictures later. This one has a round butt and wears S&W combat grips. I wanted a square butt however, this one came with it's box and papers.

Who else has one and how do you like it?

I do!!

I bought mine used about six years ago for $445.00 + tax, IIRC. Other than he rubber stocks, I like it just fine. I bought it because we have a home in the north GA. mountains and there are bears and such out there. I alternate carrying it or a S&W 1006.

Sometimes I carry my S&W 657-4 Mountain Gun.

Great gun, I would like to find one myself.
Would only slightly prefer a -3 or -4 but would not pass up a 4" -5.

I love my .44 mag mountain gun.

BTW-all -5 629's are going to be round butt as S&W deleted the square butt grip frame by then.

I've got a 4" 629-4 and really like it. Smooth action and very accurate.

I carry it almost as much as my 625-7 Mountain Gun in .45 Colt!

Congrats on the 4" -5. I have a 5" -5 and think it's the perfect big bore DA wheel gun. If you prefer the SB feel, you can always get a round-butt to square-butt conversion grip.

Thank you all for your comments and pictures. Love the wooden grips and it appears that they are RB to SB coversions! Great looking grips!

Grip Frame, thank you for clearing up the issue on when the 629's went to RB. The box that came with mine has the matching serial number but showed "SB" on the label describing the frame.

I have a 629 Classic DX, with a 6.5" barrel, that I really like and a 29-4 with a 3" barrel, RB that is a fist full. The 4" balances nicely and the RB grips feel very comfortable. I am look in forward to some range time on this one!

S&W muffs that all the time. Can't tell you how many boxes I've seen with matching s/n but the RB/SB was miss marked. It's especially common on guns that were made both RB or SB but had the same product code. Why S&W was so "stingy" with certain PC's, I don't know.

I've also seen quit a few M629 boxes that were marked ".44 Spl". Even though the gun with matching s/n was clearly marked .44 Mag on the barrel, and to my knowledge Smith has never made a .44 Spl only M629.
