6 1/2 " barrel. Nothing else comes to mind as interesting. It was an opportunity buy, don't know any history of the revolver but it looks to my untrained eye as if it did not see a lot of use.

The product code for a standard production 6.5-inch is 163638, which is a searchable term. They are still in current production.
Your gun likely has S&W's interchangeable front sight. It's spring loaded. Push the blade back and pull up. It allows you to quickly change the front blade without tools.
A collection of 5 or 6 blades was originally included from the factory.

I have not been able to remove the front sight. I am attaching pictures. Can you tell if this is replaceable or not from the photos?
I see a pin I can try to remove, but other threads I have read warn against that.

Your sight, an orange fiber optic version, is pinned in place. My 4" & 6" 629-6's, which I bought new, are keepers. They are partially-lugged and likely point more easily/naturally than your 6.5" full lugged model, whose muzzle will not rise as much when launching real .44 Magnums as the partially-lugged models. Not a problem here, as I reload my own ammo and 'my' .44 Magnum loads are barely .44 S&W Special level. For better gripping, you can always order a set of S&W/Hogue .500 Magnum OEM grips - they are X-frame size but fit the N-frame 629 perfectly and better distribute the recoil. Enjoy your new revolver.

Like Stainz says, that one doesn't have the interchangeable front sight. It might not even be a 163638. Since you have the box, assuming it's original to the gun, what is the Product Code on the label? While you're at it, what is the Spec. Ord. number? A picture of the label would work best.

Yup, the label has a different Product Number. Hope the picture uploads.
On the other hand, I did not like the front sight when dry firing it at home. Today I took it to the range and in the outdoor light (partly cloudy) the front sight was superb. In fact, the entire revolver was superb.
It isn't my first 44 magnum, nor my first S&W 44 magnum, nor even my first 629, but it is my first one with a 6.5 inch barrel and I have found my true love. It only took 68 years to do it.
Funny how different folks like different barrel lengths. I only fired it with factory 240 grain hunting loads today. I hope to load some lighter rounds tonight and try them tomorrow.

Yep, it's a product code 163698. That's actually a pc I've never seen before. In general, the gun looks standard, accept for the Hi-Vis front sight and V-notch rear blade.
Pretty cool, I'll go out on a ledge and say it's a round butt and would of shipped with Hogue round-to-square conversion grips.
BTW, the date code on the label was.....

When you wrote "pc", did you mean performance center, or something else? I am not sure about the round butt to square conversion, I don't know what to look for on that, but it is a square butt Hogue.

pc for product code. I'd never seen that product code before.
If you take the grips off, the gun is a round butt. It's the grips that make it look like a square. But I could be wrong. It's you that holds the answers.
