I bought a used 629-6 last week that had the trigger pull lightened I think with a after market spring kit. The gun misfires when shooting double action. About once per cylinder. It always fires the second time. I checked the strain screw and it is screwed all the way in. I like the trigger pull the way it is. I was thinking of replacing the firing pin with and extended firing pin from cylinder and slide. I was wondering if this would be a safe fix to the problem?

I'm shooting handloads with Starline brass and Winchester Large Pistol primers. This combination works fine in my model 29 with a stock trigger.

I bought a Smith Performance Center Light Hunter (dealer trade in). It had a WONDERFUL double action trigger pull. However, it was unreliable even with Federal primers (softer than most any other) and single action.

I replaced the springs with a matched set from Jerry Miculek's Bang Inc shop and also an extended firing pin from Apex tactical.

It is now 100% reliable and still has a nice trigger pull. I set it at 9.0 lbs dbl action and 3.0 lbs single action. If you know how to take a Smith apart, it is easy to do. If you need help, then Jerry Miculek has a nice DVD that shows exactly how to do a trigger job. Just don't try to do it as light as he recommends. 9.0 lbs dbl action is light enough and will ignite all major primer brands reliably.

NOTE: Some people shorten the strain screw. Order out a new one to be sure it is long enough.
