Just picked up a 629-6 (Power Port) today with box, papers, fired cartridge included. Now for the question: On the box end the letter are: 06-A2-LG-GR-BP-SA-SP-FS-CS-ZS. Can anyone explain these codes? I know I have a 629 with a 6 1/2" barrel and power port with rubber grips. All info appreciated.

Thanks
:D

You can't even mention a box and not show a picture. The Kernel will be so mad/sad. :D ;) jk jk

I'm sure someone will chime in soon... Once again I left my S&W Catalog at home, but those are very easy to decipher with one in hand.

Pics failed.

Can't get my pics to upload tonight. Don't know what I'm doing wrong. Have had this issue on other occasions with the S&W Forum. Any Ideas?

-06: Six shot
-A2: ???? (never figured this one out, seen it on a lot of boxes)
-LG: Large frame
-GR: Grips, Rubber
-BP: Barrel, Power port
-SA: Sights, Adjustable (rear)
-SP: Sights, Patridge (front)
-FS: Frame, Stainless
-CS: Cylinder, Stainless
-ZS: Satin finsh

Thank you sir for your help. Maybe get some different pics tomorrow. Really looking forward to shooting this one.

S&W doesn't always mark their boxes that way. That verbose style of multiple two letter codes is kinda a off-and-on thing. Some boxes have it, most don't. A lot of the boxes you see nowadays have very little "extra" info. Maybe RB/SB, barrel length, and caliber.

The "A2" means "Single Action/Double Action" according to the standard catalog.

Before 2004, "SA/DA" stood for that, but since they reassigned numbers in 2004, they made the "SA" stand for "sights adjustable"... Among other things... Confusing us more. Haha

Anyway, I didn't wanna hold out on the Kernel, especially when I found info that he didn't have. :D

With that said, you must have a late model 629-6, in the last year of production before the 629-7 came out in 2005.

Regardless... I'm jealous. Great revolver!! :)

629-6 Pics

Not the greatest pics, but you get the idea. Gotta love those Smiths.

Pete,

I think they made the the -6 (old style barrel) and -7 (two piece barrel) concurrently. Historically, S&W is known to have more than one dash number at a time in production. I've got -6's in my s/n collection years older than 2005. I admit I could be mistaken, but there's way more than one or two. The last -6 I have is from January of 2014.

Kernel,
Oh wow, I didn't know they did that. Good info!

I thought there was a mix in the "transitional" years... But I had no clue that they kept making different dashed models like that. For instance, the catalog says that the 629-6 came out in 2001 and the 629-7 came out in 2005... So I figured that they stopped the -6. But I guess not! Haha
