629, best grips for small hands?

I just got a 629 Classic 5in. The factory grips are just a bit too big for my taste. What is a good style to swap to? I'm probably gonna order from Altamont, so that's the selection I'm choosing from. I'm mainly shooting light reloads, therefore rubber isn't necessary.

I've looked far and wide and have a box of grips that I could probably trade for several guns if I sold them on Ebay. And in my experience looking relatively far and wide, the best wood grips for smaller hands are definitely Ahrends. I've had custom roper grips made that ended up basically being the same design as the Ahrends. The Ahrends have plenty of length front to back for a good grip with the support hand, but are relatively thin side to side so they keep the reach to the trigger as short as possible. They're about perfect.

Something in rubber I would suggest-you might look at Hogue-they have their bantam grips that fit my Wife's smaller hands and my bigger ones as well.

A proper grip is of the utmost importance for good shooting. Wood is pretty, and like someone else mentioned I have a whole box of pretty wood grips. They're nice to look at, but otherwise useless.

My n frame revolvers wear rubbers. The Hogue bantams or finger groove combats are what I would suggest. Good luck.

Revolver Grips

Congratulations on your new S&W Model 629
Classic 5in Bbl.

I too have Small Hands, from my Norwegian and
German Heritage.

I Shoot a lot. I found what works best for me is
the Original S&W/Hogue Black Rubber Finger
Groove Grips. For Shooting many bullets in one
Session, they give the Best Control and Grip and
position the Trigger Finger the same every time.

Wood Grips are Pretty, but if you are willing to
spend hundreds of dollars on something Custom
to fit the Hand, and Checkered that may help you.

Below are Examples of Grips I use. the MG's have
S&W Rubber, and the little Model 696 has Original
Uncle Mike's smaller Batum Grips.

Have small hands too. All of my shooter K, L, & N frames wear Hogue Monogrips. No they ain't pretty and you have to be careful of moisture and crud getting behind the grip, but they are comfortable and provide very good control.

Hogue Miculek grips work well for me, though I haven't tried them on an N frame.

The Uncle Mikes boot grips also. They cover the back strap but are not very thick in that area.

I have short fingers and always wanted skinny grips, although they eat the web of my thumb.

Then while shooting the much-maligned Glock one day, I had an epiphany: a big, fat grip provides a lot more meat for the support hand to latch on to, and better recoil control.

Now all the rubber Hogues and Pach Compac Pros I've accumulated occupy a box in my closet. My K frames, including my carry gun, wear either Uncle Mikes boot or JMs. The JMs especially provide much better recoil control and don't chew up my hand.

I shoot just as well one-hand DA as with smaller grips.

Now that I think about it, I'll order some JMs for my 24-3.

For small hands, VZ grips are a good compromise. Quality grips and good looking. Keep in mind, depending on your grip position, you may/may not experience some thumb bite from the cylinder release depending on your grip.

I see that they only have the round, finger grip type for N frames. How are those for recoil?

I agree, VZs are running small, anything I have tried is too small for me.

I have smaller hands and Ahrends Retro Combats are the absolute best fit. So are his Retro Targets .
Retro Combats in cocobolo on the model 58 in my avatar.
Also have a set on on model 64 K frame.....love them both, they fit the hands of people who can't palm basketballs...like me .

If you want target stocks that are somewhat smaller than S&W, try Herrett target stocks. Work great for me, on N, or K frames. RM fits N frame, and RK fits K/L. (square butt) Bob

Your 629 probably is a round butt?

The Altamont Ropers are smaller than most wood grips, and wider than the Altamont targets.

I have Altamont Ropers on a K frame square butt, and an N frame round butt. I like these grips a lot, and they look great.

I have a pair of Altamont targets N square butt. I will be selling them once Altamont gets the N square ropers available.

I use Hogues Bantums as another poster has mentioned on most 6XX's including a 629. I find the round butt aspect fits me better on revolvers then square butt.

One thing that should be mentioned is that you will get a rolling action as in like firing a single action. Something you do not want to do is fight it. It will fatigue you. Just simple let the firearm go up. I'm used to it but I use single actions more then double. I'm actually more comfortable with the roll.

Another consideration for small hands and light loads in a .44 mag N frame might be service style magna stocks with a grip adaptor as shown on this N frame model 28.

The grips shown on the .44's are comfortable to shoot with .44 Special rounds. I've found almost all N frame "rubber" grips to be too large for my hands.
