I own a 629 classic and dont shoot it much , when I do its mainly 44 specials that I run down it , that said can I safely shoot say 240gr hard cast down it w/o worry of it going out of time? I aam talking about maybe 12-24 rds a year....AT MOST!

thanks....Jay

Yes, full power loads using 240 grain bullets are fine. What gets pre-endurance package 29's and 629's out of time is full power loads using bullets weighing more than 250 grains. I'm speaking of the 300 grain whoppers that the steel silhouette shooters like to use. Full implementation of the endurance package occurred with the 29-5/629-3, so it is unlikely that you will be able to shoot enough full power loads to get than 629 Classic out of time.

I have a 629 Classic and fire mostly Magnum reloads out of it with no issues in the 23 years I've owned it . Doubt you will have any problems with 12 or 24 rounds of cast bullets a year.

Can you clarify exactly what model & dash number your 629 is?

S&W has made model 629's called "629 Classic" but I think you're talking about an old model 629. Is this right?

The 629's didn't start to get endurance features until the 629-2E model. The 629-3 got all of the endurance features.

"Hard cast 240gr" lead bullets don't tell us how hot they are loaded.

Obviously they can be loaded mild or very hot. Back in the 70's my linotype lead bullets (before widespread jacketed bullets) were loaded above what is considered max today & loosened up my M29.

Can you give us more details?
