629 concealed

+1

I started carrying my 3" 629 in a SR sourdough just after this last Christmas. Untucked button down, SR real mans belt, their sourdough and you're good to go.

Do any of you have recommendations on carry ammo other than hornady 44 special? That's all I could find at my local cabelas and bass pro.

I've never fired a factory round out of my 629PC, have used it exclusively with a sort of odd concoction.....300 or 320 grain CastPerformance gas-check SWC style bullets, and a moderate/mid-range load in 44 Mag brass. I haven't chrono'd these but am guessing with the short barrel that they are sub 1000 fps, maybe in the 900-950 range. I don't CCW this gun for social purposes, I generally do not carry handloads in CCW or home-defense guns, and its purpose in my universe is to be carried in the woods and backcountry where it might be used in the chance of a bear or lion encounter, or to dispatch a crippled animal.

Sadly I can't conceal carry my 629-3 (8 3/8" barrel). I have before my addition of a new red dot Millet that I installed. Now it won't fit in my old Bianchi shoulder rig anymore. I do have a large cordura nylon scope carry holster for hunting, etc. it works well, but can not really be concealed well at all. The old Bianchi shoulder rig would do well with a nice blazer jacket or my oilskin duster, unless I sat down in the car or truck to drive, LOL you could tell it was there with you the whole time while driving. Now out walking around, it wasn't so bad, just "heavy" as heck compared to my now newer carry gun, (Kimber ultra carry II 45ACP.) But until recently, it was possible to carry the larger 629-3 while it was UN-scoped. I also never carried speed loaders, I just had six in and six loose in my jacket pocket, lol.

I tried the 165 gr Hornady SD rounds with the (gummy bear bullets) but did not get the accuracy I get from the 180gr XTPs 44 special Custom loads they offer. I carry a 3" M624 in a Desantis holster. I'm not a big guy but it's doable.

I carry a 629 4" in a Galco IWB, and it is very comfortable. It feels more conspicuous than my 1911, but I haven't had any problems with it. I don't think it's a problem at all when I'm standing or sitting. When I walk, I do wonder if it is noticeable.

That's a good point. Anyone who's trained to spot someone carrying will notice us carrying a 629 IWB even if the gun isn't printing at all. The extra weight causes us to walk slightly differently and it's really hard to consciously offset that slight change. I don't mind if trained law enforcement professionals know I'm carrying it, since it's perfectly legal, as long as the bad guys don't know and go for a gun grab.
