629 front sight height???

Gentleman,

This weekend I was shooting my 629-6 4" with some of my reloads. My load was 8.8grains of Power Pistol under a cast 429421with WLP.

I was shooting at 25yards and the shots were hitting 6-8 inches high.

What I would like to know is if anyone else has had this problem? If so, did you replace the front sight or a combination of both front and rear sights to be able to zero the load. And what size sight did you use?

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

did you try to raise the rear sight?

He was already shooting high. Raising the rear sight would have made things worse by further raising the POI.

I'm not familiar with that model, but if it has an adjustable rear sight, did you try lowering the sight to lower your POI?
If it has a fixed rear sight or if you bottomed out the rear sight adjustment then you'll need to get a taller front sight.

just looked at one of my 629-6 4" the rear sight looks to be in the "middle" and my load is very similar to yours 9gr unique- rcbs 250k . My front sight extends .300" above the ramp. I have three 4" 629-6's two of them are unfired but the front sights are all the same

Woops, I forgot to mention that the rear sight was bottomed out.

I just took a quick measurement and the front sight is .280 above the ramp.

I did send an email to S&W and see what they have to say.

This same load is shooting high out of my 2 Super Blackhawks as well. I have already replaced the front sight on one of them with a taller .45 version, but haven't had a chance to shoot it yet.

I just run some numbers through 500 Magnum nut sight calulator. If my numbers are close looks like I need to add .033" which would bring my sight up near the .300 that CWH44300 said his sight was.

The taller front sight will hopefully give you enough adjustment to allow your POI to match your POA.
