I just bought a new Model 629 4" revolver. I really don't care for the red ramp sight and prefer the patridge sight on my Model 25. The 629 has a pinned in the sight base so it should be easily replaced.

I'm looking for either a gold bead or patridge style replacement front sight that will be regulated for 50 yards.

How tall should this sight be?

Anyone have a link to a vendor selling them?

Thanks!

Probably a .250" would be about right, available from Brownell's, Midway and probably S&W as well as some other aftermarket sources.

Thanks for the response.

My front sight measures right at .275" so .250 will probably work sinche it looks like I have some leeway in the adjustment now.

Following your suggestions Joni, I found some sights. Brownells has the the McGivern type gold bead sight from SDM Fabricating and extra pins in case I lose one. Midway is out, and S&W wants too much for them.

I'll probably be placing an order soon.

If anyone has pics of either patridge or gold bead fronts, I'd appreciate seeing them.

Here's what I've got. Just picked it up earlier today.

If you get a sight blade and pin (the pin has one end with a slight taper on it), make sure to order a proper size drill bit or two or three. I got mine from Brownell's. The sight blades come without the hole drilled through so that will be required.

I don't know about the sight height question - wouldn't S&W be a source for the sight as well as info.?

On an alternative note: I bought the Brownell's front sight paint kit. It has
5 or 6 color dyes, and the two epoxy mix
bottles with little cups to mix in and add
dye. It rquires the user to supply the fine
artist's brush - available at arts/hobby stores.
I got it because the red insert on the ramp front sight of my 686P was hard to pick up with the poor lighting at the range I frequent. I used the bright yellow to paint the red insert. Now I can pick up the front much easier. I'm gonna try it on my 617 with it's
patridge next. It's not permanent and wil wear
but the epoxy paint means it lasts longer than the first time you clean the gun. I'll see
how long it lasts. The other colors are orange, two reds, white's and the mentioned
yellow. I wish it had a dye so I could mix
a bright blue. Maybe I'll try a small bottle
of bright blue as the dye for the epoxy and
see har har how that works.

I think the gold bead runs around $50 from some gun smith services I've checked. it's a drill job and the gold bead is on a pin.

Don't be too quick to change blade heights. Try the .275" blade first and make sure it will zero with the type of loads you use. If you install a .250" blade and then can't zero, you get to pay for the same job twice.

Well I did it. Got the stuff from Midway.

Front sight $6.29
Front sight pin $.69
#54 Drill bit $1.29

10 minutes with the punch, hammer, and drill

Sight picture is much crisper now. I really like it.

Not bad for less than $10.

Shoots exactly to the same point of aim as with the original sight. Plenty of adjustment up and down too.
