My friends LGS has a consigned model 58 priced @ $1500
I did not ask to take it out, and handle because at that price I was "iffy" as to its real value and some out of my comfort zone.
The was a lot of glare from overhead lights but appears to be VERY nice and S# dates to 1974.

any thoughts as to being overpriced, I am interested but not at that asking ?
I'd think closer to a grand ?

To me that seems a little pricey, but I've seen them for sale on GB anywhere from $1200-1800. I can't claim to be an expert on Model 58s, but I certainly wouldn't pay that much for a Model 57 (unless it was an early one and had a nice presentation and all the documentation). You could always ask your lgs to contact the seller with a counteroffer...perhaps $1200. Good luck.

If the serial # starts with the letter 'S' then it is likely prior to 1968. The stocks that are on it a Diamond PC Magnas which were correct before 1968.

Is there a dept name or initials on the other side? A SFPD a or SAPD (or LADC) model 58 is worth having for the extra $$$

A good solid S series 58 will bring 1-1300 depending on condition. And NO, mine are not for sale

ETA - the stocks shown in the photo are diamond magna, not the PC that would be on a 58
:)

Grips do not appear to be the correct PC (?) ones w/o the diamond and rounded on the bottom outer edges. Got one on GB earlier this year for a lot less (high three figures). Mine had the wrong grips, targets in my case, so I didn't mind using them until a bargain on the correct ones came along.

I guess I'll have them take it out and read the S# = serial # myself, maybe pull the grips for a S# look see.
I did view it in the case, that photo angle was to avoid glare.
The S# Brad gave me was over the phone, he did not mention a prefix/
, and it's been there a few months.

I was able to buy two nice model 58's, both S serial numbers, one from 1967 and one from 1969. They were $1000 and $1100. I am on the hunt for first year or very early Model 58's but they are elusive. The "S" serial number versions don't come up for sale frequently.

That is IMHO a bit pricey. The trouble is, if that is what you really want the options are severely limited. I got mine several years ago for the around $850 IF I REMEMBER CORRECTLY. The N frame Smiths are going for $1k plus in a lot of places for anything even slightly unusual. That being said I don't think I would pay that even if I didn't have one already.

The 1974 date doesn't appar to match the diamond magnas to me. May be the photo but they look a little "off"?? Gun looks really nice, though, and you can't mave my 58 for that price. They have a bit of a cult following.

And shouldn't they be PC Magnas? That's what mine came with (former LEO gun).

Adios,

Pizza Bob

So, the S# is N 271308 ... so I'm thinking Mid 1976 ?
the consigner was opposed to pulling the grips.

I decided to not to make an offer,
Had I done so, it would have been around high 3 figures.

I was under the impression that the magna's would not have the diamond by the mid 70's
I asked if I could pull the grips to check the number ( I assume the diamonds might still be desirable )

The Consigners' reply over the phone was " Buy the gun you can pull the grip to your hearts content"
I took that as snarky reply, so I decided to abandon an offer.

In 2019 I paid $1300 for mine. It is a S prefix and by the serial number, a first year of production. I fell back on my belief you never overpay, you just pay too early.

For myself, it always comes down to how much I want it, and am comfortable with the price. I have been told more than once (usually by my dad) I spent too much, but the time to buy is when you have it in hand.

I hope you find this helpful.

I appreciate all the replies, and helpful thoughts.

I think I'll let this one stew a while @ $1500 on an N prefix gun (1976?) I'm not all that comfortable.

I think the OP's pic shows PC magnas, look carefully at the rear, bottom corner of the stocks, you can see the curve. At least I can. Those would be correct for a pre-1968 gun
I agree that they look like correct PC Magnas. Those N-frame diamond PC's had a very subtle edge profile, not at all like the K-frames and later (non-diamond) N-frame PC Magnas.
As for value, $1500 would seem more reasonable if it included the original box, paperwork & tools, but for the bare gun it seems a bit high in relation to current gun prices.

I would gladly pay $1300 for a first year production Model 58. They are hard to find and would keep my first year production 57's company. Maybe you can have your dad call me to work out a deal? ;)

This one sold on GB last night. Serial number S2594xx, one single bidder, hammer price of $800.00.

Wow One happy guy this morning. Never own a 41 mag in any configuration, always went for the 44s. I did shoot one of these and considered it for law enforcement carry, but opted for the stainless model 65 instead. Always regretted that decision.

Among 41 caliber handguns, the Ruger Blackhawk, 4 5/8 inch, is is lightweight and about the best balanced carry in the woods handgun they make. When compared to my 4 inch 29, the Ruger has a little less power, but carried and shoots very well. I just have to wonder how this one would do for that sidearm carried up around 10,000 feet/?

This one wakes up my interest--again.

I don't have any photos of my model 58. It is one of two I had. Both were blue. I kept a like new in box example with the N serial prefix and sold my S serial numbered gun to one of my best friend's, dirt cheap. I do have a photo of my .41 magnum Blackhawk.

$1500 seems like a scalper's price. The seller hopes someone somewhere will want it badly enough to pay the price, but isn't that true of most ads on GB and GI?

I paid $250 ( 1980 ) for my used model 58 ... the factory PC grips and Tyler T-Grip are put away for safe keeping and the Ahrends Retro Combat's , in Rosewood, are for shooting ...
Take into consideration inflation .... $750 - $800 sounds more in line ... if $900 doesn't get it ... think long and hard about going any higher !

To me ... $800 sounds about right for where I live .

it's an N prefix N 271308 circa 1976, I don't know it has original grips OR ?
The dude is not interested, allowing a quick look to see.
Even my Friend, the LGS owner though his negitive reply, was somewhat rude.
May even have return to factory marking stamped under that grip scale.

I've moved on
