629 MagNaPort Grip Problem

I have small stubby boogerhooks. My (new to me) 629 MagNaPort Snubby (Pound Butt N Frame) has a Pachmayr Gripper Decelerator grip SN-GR/D 05148. These have a thick pad of rubber around the backstrap. They also do not fit all that well behind the trigger.

Unfortunately, I have to shift my hand around the grip towards the trigger to pull double action. This causes me to take the recoil on the thumb knuckle and first phalange. That just causes great pain for days after I shoot. To compensate for this, I change out my carry J and K frame revolvers to a Pachmayr Pro type grip that has no back strap covering. I do realize that I am giving up cushioning, and that is precisely why the Pachmayr type grip is used!

I just talked to Pachmayr/Lyman, and all their round butt N frame grips have the extra padding on the backstrap. Hogue seems to as well, even though I do not like the deep finger grooves I would consider that. I can handle the bare backstrap recoil, as long as the grip fits my smaller hands.

Any suggestions, short of just having some custom plastic made grips made for this gun? (I do not want to do that particularly.) Wood or porous grips, I would sweat on and ruin.

I've had the same problem with Pachmayr's. I went to Hogue's in general because they don't cover the backstrap, they feel and work great for me, and I don't need to worry about banging up my wood grips.

I have a Trail Boss - essentially the same gun. I put a set of Patrick's elk stag grips and a set of Tyler T-grips underneath and it's great. Rubber grips just give recoil a running start. I also like Aherends and German Nil grips which fit my medium sized hands. If the grip fits, the recoil is easier to manage.

Don't know if it would help, but have you considered the "new style" 629 grips with covered backstrap. I didn't like them at first, but after 200-300 heavy loads I have a new appreciation for them.

I haven't tried DA with heavy loads yet...got quite a few mild loads through it DA and it was fine.

Hogue grips do not cover the backstrap. I believe there is also a "Bantam" grip available for people with small hands.

I believe that fit, and distribution of recoil over as much of the soft surface of the hand as possible, are FAR more important to shooting comfort than covering the backstrap. You don't need rubber over the backstrap. If the fleshy parts of the hand are receiving the recoil, that is enough cushioning. I have a double-Magnaported 3" 629 (RB) on which I have used several sets of grips. The best are a Fishpaw-produced French walnut copy of Pachmayr Compac Professionals, only just barely fatter. They are checkered, and fit the backstrap perfectly, producing no additional ridges, and fill my hand, perhaps more than I would like for another gun, but for the heavy-recoil 629, they are perfect. They are hard wood and leave the backstrap uncovered, yet they are the most comfortable grips I have used on this gun.

Pachmayr makes Compac grips for N RB; I'm not so sure that they make Compac Pros. You can also make a set of K RB Pachmayr grips fit pretty well by cutting away some of the rubber on the inside in what I would call the "grip adapter area." You might try that with a set of K RB Compac Pros.

Badger made, probably still makes, a set of finger-groove grips for N RB that you will probably fit you better than most. However, for me, at least, they do not come close to the Pachmayrs or Fishpaws.

Have Craig Spegel or Herretts make you a set of custom boot
grips. I have not tried Herretts smaller grips but they are made to
fit one's hand. Spegels are more generic in fit but work well
and leave the back strap open. I have a set on my 3" 624:

Don't worry about ruining the wood. They have a lacquer finish and are designed for concealed carry.

I like the looks of the wood, but alas... I cannot use wood. This will be a carry gun and I will sweat all over the grips where they contact me and ruin them in short order.
