LGS has a P & R, 4" 629 no dash with what appears to be a factory presentation case with an interior that needs to be restored. I was quoted an "out the door" price of $1,700.00.

I have a few questions:

-The presentation case has dove tailed corners instead of mitered corners. Is this "correct" for the time period?

-I realize that this model, in 94% condition, is not easy to find and wonder if the price is "in line" with today's prices?

What grips are on the gun?

I'd be a buyer at $1.5k-1.7k depending on the condition/grips etc. and the box not being very important to me. (but that's me)

I got its longer brother which came is a presentation box and wears presentation grips that are original to the gun.

I like shooting it so it's dirty. But not as dirty as Harrys...;)

The case you describe sounds correct. The revolver points to the right and the accessories are housed in a compartment below. The case shown below is for a 6-inch Model 629 shipped in 1980.

I purchased a 4" M/629 no dash last year for $1,050., it had been Magna-ported and wore Pachs. I had owned one several years ago that I paid $600. for and foolishly let it get away, won't ever let this one get away.

The Mahogany presentation cases from 1960-1985 had a type of "finger jointed" corners! S&W experimented with a couple different corner joints, which included a miter joint, but always returned to the finger joint!

The 4" model 629 no dash was introduced in 1981 and sometime in early 1982 they changed to the -1 guns. Also, sometime around that same time period they changed to the ABCxxxx numbering system!

I have recovered these liners and changed the grips to the Presentation Target type. This is the way a 629 no dash could have been shipped!

I have the same setup as jcelect above, and $1700 would not even come close. I have 2 friends that want it and have been offered $2K for it. I still own it

I seem to never come across short barrels. On the other hand my model 629 no dash pinned and recessed was only made one year. It is the 8 3/8 barrel. So I went with it. Still looking for 4 inch.

For a little reality check, I paid $800.00 out the door last November for this. I then spent a little over $100.00 to have the case redone. I didn't even bother to haggle. I paid the money and walked out the door. It's a 6" no dash, but I don't think a 4" barrel is worth an extra 1000 bucks. There are still deals to be had, you just have to be patient. You also have to have a local gun shop who doesn't put every good used gun that comes in the door on GB.
