Hello Gentlemen

A beautiful accurate 4” 629 I picked up from an estate sale.

I sent it off to be checked and a trigger job.

Just recently a single action problem arose.
Double action is perfect but strangely in single action pulling the hammer back is very good. Then the 3rd through 5 pull of the hammer is very stiff. Then the 6 pull it starts to become normal again.

The last time I shot it before this I put fifty 44 magnum loads through it without a hitch.

I look through past posts and checking the strain screw which I did.
No difference.

I was wondering if anyone has something I can check before sending it back.

Thanks Don

Don,
Was this work performed by the factory?

Does the single action behave normally when you dry fire with the cylinder removed? (Hold the thumbpiece back and dry fire)
If so, probably an issue with long ratchets.

Could also be excessive runout on the extractor rod.

Other ideas will be forthcoming.....

Does the barrel/cylinder gap change as you rotate the cylinder? Is the front of the cylinder clean?

Thanks for reply.

I just pulled the cylinder out. Held back the thumb release and worked it single action.
All was smooth as silk for all six chambers.
Put the cylinder back and same problem arose.

Action job done by well known Smith.
I’d like to see if it’s something simple I can handle before contacting him.

Cylinder gap perfect all the way around.
Smith did a wonderful job checking it and trigger job.

When I got it back from the Smith a month ago.
All functions were perfect.

This problem arose 2 days ago.

Try it with empty brass in the cylinder. As posted above, it might long ratchets. Ensure the extractor rod is tight and has no run-out. Lastly, check for any debris or powder residue under the extractor. That's all I have for now until you check further...

Just noticed something strange.
The gun is closed and ready to go.
Out of curiosity I pushed the thumb release forward and let it move back on its own then pulled back to cock the hammer.
All chambers the hammer pull was good except one.
One that one when I pushed the thumb release forward it locked up the gun.
Only when I pushed the thumb release back it unlocked.

Im unsure I should open the side plate to look or just send it back to be checked.

Something else.
When pushing the release forward on that chamber that lock the gun up the cylinder ever so slightly comes out of its position from the frame as if it is pushed out.
When I push it back in it will snap the thumb release back into place and is no longer locked up.

If it were mine, it would get a good cleaning. Sideplate off, insides out, soaked in your favorite solvent and scrubbed well. Reassembled and then 1/2 drop of oil on the friction points, if you like.

If it still chokes up, then look for problems.

Kevin

Thanks Gentlemen.

All great help.
Tomorrow I’m will open the side plate and give it a good cleaning and oiling.
If that will take care of it great.
If still a problem I’ll send it back.
I’m sure it will get fixed properly.
