I was out checking the local shops for an N frame this past weekend. Only thing I found was a 629-6 4" with a price of $595. It is a lock gun and I have no knowledge or experience with these. Gun is in nice condition with factory case and factory Hogue grips.
All my S&W revolvers are of 1970's vintage before the lock was thought up.
What's the opinion of these lock guns? Dealer said the pre locks are getting hard to find and he rarely gets any N frame trade in action.

They are fine shooters, but it won't have any collector interest. I wouldn't count on it as a serious protection piece, until you neuter the lock. Just my opinion, of course.

I have bought both a 4" (SKU 163603) and a 6" (163606) 629-6 brand new within the last three years. They have been among the best revolvers I have ever had the pleasure to own and shoot. I have shot everything from ferret flatulance homebrew loads in .44 Russian cases to a mix of .44 Specials and up to some hot factory 180gr UMC, amongst other, Magnums. Both of mine sport the S&W Accessories '.500 Magnum Hogue monogrips', OEM grips on the S&W .460 & .500 Magnum revolvers. That grip fits K/L, X, & N-frames equally well - and does absorb some of the recoil, while the moderate muzzle rise persists with hot loads. Still, the grips make the 4" a great protective shooter - and the 6" like a rifle. Stay within factory loads and you'll have a long life together.

As far as the Infernal Lock is concerned, my worries are elsewhere. I have a few so-equipped - and many thousands of rounds sent downrange. I have never had a problem. I even have a 642-2 in my pocket - a 642 with the IL. The only concern is the price - that's more than the 6"-er, the same MSRP as the 4" both then and now, cost me three years back - brand new! Of course, they are more now... and if it is in decent shape, it may be a deal.

BTW, my 4" 629 replaced my 629 Mountain Gun - a 4" style I loved. I like the standard 4" 629 better now - it has a larger hammer & trigger, better frt/rear sights, and, even with a full sized partially lugged barrel, only weighs two ounces more than the 629MG. Those grips I mentioned are great for real Magnums. If it's a good gun - and the price seems fair - go for it!

It's a nice gun but $595 is too much for a used one. I just looked at my receipt for my 5" 629 and I paid $599 a couple of years ago. See if he'll go down a bit or tell him you want it for $600 OTD. I've got a 3" and a 5" and would'nt mind a 4" either.
