Were all 629s with 6 & 1/2" barrels drilled and tapped for scope mounts? If not, what would the breakoff be in serial numbers? Is the rear sight any indication of this process(rounded vs. square front end)? It's not possible for me to look at this revolver at this time. Will S&W modify any that aren't so?

The 629-4s' are all D&T, Some models of the -3s' were also like the 629-3 Hunter. Usually the top strap is rounded at the front on D&T models. S&W will D&T a earlier gun but the front screw is larger on the mount and will not fit the original sight unless it is drilled out also. Any good machinest should be able to D&T your gun for a reasonable price.
