I recently purchased a brand new 629. I love the gun and is a blast to shoot. The bowling pins really swing and dance shooting full house 44 magnum 240g.

What grips would you run. The grips from the factory are a little too big. What would you fellas recommend?

It's all personal taste. I just put a pair of Culina grips on my newer 629. The rubber grips that come on them these days are rather thin so if those are too large almost anything you add will be larger. Best bet is to try a few grips you like on an N frame just to see what you like the feel of. Culina grips are exceptional!

The last time I looked the rubber supplied on most S&W revolvers covered the back strap extending trigger reach. Previously rubber Hogue Mono-Grips that left the back strap exposed were standard on most production revolvers. Also Mono-grips are fairly small near the bottom. Hogues work better for shorter fingers. However, all rubber Mono-Grips have finger grooves that like all finger grooves don't seem to fit anyone perfectly. In rubber they are only about $22 new and sell used in the $10 to $15 range. Better looking Mono-Grips can be ordered made from a variety of woods with or without the finger grooves but I'd try an inexpensive rubber Mono-Grip before spending that much money.

Just put on some inexpensive HOGUE's and go have fun. I switched out my combat woods for the Hogues and its easier on the hand with 240gr.

Depends upon what you need the grips to do. For a knock around endeavor, I pop on a set of Pachmayrs. They really suck up the recoil and they can take a lot of abuse and not show it. In wet weather (I live in Washington!) they provide a no-slip surface.
For handsomeness, if you like wood, I'd get hold of Eagle Custom grips and try a set of their Heritage models. I have a pair on my Model 57 six-inch and it is really comfy to shoot.
I have a set of elk antler "magna" grips on my 4-inch Model 57 that are pretty snazzy, also from Eagle.

I put round butt Pachmayrs on my 4" 629-1. Required some frame work, but fills my palm just right. It was for competitions not a collector's piece. A tool I had magna ported as well.
BTW Ahrend's N frame grips are a bit smaller than S&W.

Kim Ahrends...

I just purchased a 627 PC Snubbie and I'm probably going to put these on... $70 on ebay.
