64-3 value please

IIRC, I paid just under $300.00 for this S&W 64-2 and the PWL holster in August 2009, no box, papers or original stocks. It seems to me that was just before the 3" heavy barrel K frames began to get real popular. The gun you asked about would easily bring $500.00+ in my area.
If you're correct and it's an NRA "very good" to "excellent", that'll run in the $450 to $500 zone, depending on a variety of factors. There's a comparable one for sale in our classifieds here that hasn't had a buyer yet at $525, so despite the desirable 3" barrel, I think the perceived limitations of .38 Special only are keeping the 3" Model 10s and 64s out of the 3" Model 13s and 65s zone.

I think you are correct - in that on average, a 3" 64 won't bring quite the premium of a 3"65. However, 3" K frames in general (even .38 SPL's) are in demand, & appreciating 20% +/- yearly.
What ever the current value, it will be worth considerably more - this time next year.
And the "it's ONLY a .38SPL" thing? Most .357 owners shoot primarily .38spl level loads - regardless what they admit to in public. Granted, it's nice to have a magnum option for carry, but then the fine folks at Buffalo Bore have an impressive 158LSWC-HP / .38 SPL +P answer for that.

Agree with your analysis on desirability. However, I've never even seen a 3" 64 in the flesh! Would've bought it if I had. Them as has 'em, keeps 'em, must be.

Quite true; didn't mean to imply they aren't much sought after -- they are, and the dearth of them on the market shows it.
That has been my experience, indeed.
Agreed again. My use of "only" acknowledges how I think certain others look at being "limited" to .38 Special; I genuinely prefer the round for virtually all potential social work and elsewhere here have touted the 10s and 64s as preferable because there's a .38 load for every occasion, and the slightly smaller cylinder on the 10s and 64s versus the 13s and 65s makes an already beautifully balanced 3" K-frame even more so in my hand.
If I had a choice between a nice 10 or 64 and a nice 13 or 65, I'd take the nice 13 or 65...so I could sell them for profit, buy the 10 or 64, and have a tidy sum left over for ammo.
With the fairly recent introduction of the .38 Spl short barrel and high performance ammo from the different makers the 3" 64 and 10 fill the bill perfectly. But of course I would grab a nice 3" 13 or 65 if the opportunity ever presented itself.

Had you pegged for a .38 guy - after the "perceived limitation" comment. Had to laugh about that one. Amazing how many folks really do labor under misconceptions regarding the ballistic capabilies of the Special (.38 & .44) calibers...
