So I just traded back for my 640-1 that I bought new back in the mid 90's. The pachmyer grips are old and so slick in my hand the gun slips all over during recoil.

I need Suggestions for Grips and a front sight.

Maybe some medium tint, smooth walnut boot grips with a patridge gold bead front sight.

My free opinion, haha

Crimson Trace laser grips solve both problems, but a touch of red nail polish on the front sight couldn't hurt either.

Get a set of new Pachmayrs

On my 640 I tried several wood grips and G10 grips from Hogue (see photo) which had a cheese grater effect. I ended up going back to my Pachmayr Pros.
On my front sight I put some red/orange nail polish that I bought at Walmart for a buck. It holds up pretty well.

The model 65 is in the photo for no particular reason.:D

If you are interested in trying the Hogue's PM me.

How about some Spegel's and a fiber optic front sight.

And you can still find UM boot grips and full size combats on the market. Some times here and on EBAY.

I keep a Hogue rubber boot grip on my 640 that I use in my EDC rotation. In my own situation, I've found it gives the right combination of immediate "grip-ability" when drawing from a pocket and no worry about avoiding scratches and dings like I have with nicer wood grips. The extra little "lip" at the bottom definitely helps with control when shooting. Very inexpensive, usually under $25.

I have many J frames work from Teddy Jacobson and Karl Sokol. Karl Sokol made me for one of my J frames I guess he ground down the stock blade and fabricated a site that was dovetailed into the gun. I have some K frames and L frames and he made non-adjustable sights in the back and dovetail front ones. Karl Sokol can basically fabricate anything where are used to live in New York state I use to go over to his shop in Rutland Vermont he has a real working shop milling machine etc he's not just a bench guy he's legitimately can make it almost anything. And I have some J frames that Karl did that he put an AO/XS big dot sight. I believe the big dot Xs company makes one that goes over the blade of the gun if you don't have a pinned sight. Karl put a big dot on my 442 it went right over the blade because it was not a pined sight.

Uncle mikes j frame combat grips if you can find them. You can sometimes find them on fleabay. I believe they will solve your grip problem.

Thanks for all the great replies. I had a pair of the old uncle Mike's boot grips, (I think that's where they're from) lying around in one of my many boxes of old parts. I threw those on and painted the front sight. That'll do for now, but I think I may try and get a hogue combat style or larger grips that cover the backstrap as well. I still want something different for the front sight too.

I only have 640 no dash and shoot .38 but I've found the factory grips with T grip works best of the three for me. Dab of auto touch up paint on the front sight and go.

IMHO my 640s are a "get off me" close range weapon, not a 50 yard one.

Just my opinion, worth exactly what you paid for it.

Other than the paint on the front sight, yours now looks just like mine!

I just took the factory boot grips off mine. To hard to handle with .357 loads and be comfortable. I put on factory smooth bananas and will try again next week
