I picked up a 640 Pro today. The fit and finish are great and the gun seems to function fine. I will take it to the range next week. I have not purchased a new S&W J-Frame in a very long time. The trigger pull of the new 640 came out of the box pretty bad but after dry firing and oiling it a bit, it seems to be smoothing out. It is still not as nice as the two other "magnum" J-Frames I bought back when these first appeared. My question is do I need to put in new springs to get the trigger "right" or do I just keep dry firing?

Like any New Revolver it should smooth out with some trigger time. My 640-1 is Smooth as butter. Enjoy your new purchase !

I have always believed in firing the gun first before undertaking any project. There is a similar thread in Modern Revs on action work for a 638: good reading IMO. I may be wrong, but perhaps the factory installs heavy springs in J-frames (especially the Magnums) to increase reliability. As a gun guy (forget who) once wrote: "100% reliability is where you start from."
