Finally got myself a new 3 inch Colt Viper at my LGS. Have wanted one since they were first introduced at the start of 2024. I think this is a great revolver carry option, weighing in at only 27 ounces but still providing a six shot capacity and filling a niche between Smith’s J and K frame options.

The finish is absolutely beautiful and she just feels great in the hand. Dry fired it with snap caps with smooth, stack-free trigger pulls in both DA and SA.

I’ve heard mostly good things about this revolver. Hopefully I’ll be adding to that consensus with my range report next week.

I’ll be interested to see what you think of it. I handled one recently and can’t say it felt good to me, but Colts never do. I wasn’t tempted, but I remember thinking if I was to buy one, I’m sure I’d be shopping for some Pachmayrs for it. It seemed like it would be a real meanie with full-charge .357 Magnums. 😬

I should have mentioned I intend to only run .38sp with this and if carried, .38s+P. Several reviewers commented on the harsh .357 magnum recoil. My thought on that was, well yeah, it only weighs 27 ounces!

Yes, at 27 ounces that one will definitely be a handful with real .357s. With the medium velocity 125 grain loads that seem to be popular these days, it might not be too bad. Those loads are little more than “glamorized 9mms” but they do cut way down on the recoil in guns like the 340PD.
