Yesterday I ordered a 640 Pro Series. It's beautiful AND I can see the sights. Anyone have any experience with this gun??

It's an excellent defensive carry piece. Run a search -- this model's been discussed a good bit. ;)

I have a 60 , 640 and the 640 pro . By far the pro is the best carry gun because of those sights .

I like my 640 Pro despite having to send it back to the Mothership twice (barrel is still slightly clocked). Look it over closely before pulling out your cash.

It is a great carry J-frame which has some style with it's fluted barrel and 3-dot night sights.

Now to the sights. I give them an A for the idea of night sights on this gun and a C for choice of sights.

First, the idea of putting good sights on a J-frame is a great idea. Just because a gun has a short barrel doesn't mean you don't want good sights to allow you to shoot it accurately. Great idea.

Now to my C rating on choice of sights. I have two issues with them: they are 3-dots and the front sight dot "appears" smaller than the rear.

I'm not a huge fan of 3-dot sights and prefer a two dot (dot-over-dot configuration). Beyond the 2-dot vs 3-dot issue, they should have picked a bigger dot up front and/or small dots in the rear. I find the front dot appears slightly smaller than the rear dots as you sight the gun. This draws my eyes away from the front and towards the rear sight... Not what you want in a sighting system, especially on a self defense gun.

Again, a nice carry gun with 357 Magnum capability if you can handle the blast and flash (I carry 38 +Ps in mine). Like any new guns in today's no QC world, look it over for manufacturing flaws.

Searching doesn't seem to work with 3 character words/numbers.:(

Edit: However, "640Pro" provides a bunch of results:)

I just picked one up today and I'm looking forward to shooting it. Iv'e been looking for one for a long time and they are kinda hard to find. I found this one on vacation and I had to give almost MSRP for it!

I have no experience with the 640 Pro, but it still looks heavy, in addition to the taller dimensions because of the added sights. There's no such thing as the perfect gun, but I think a lighter weight barrel, with protected extractor rod, perhaps 3" in length for both extraction and sight radius, and improved sights such as the 640 Pro, or better. Maybe a sight channel like the original gun, for lower profile, but with a big dot up front. I'll take mine can be in .38spl.

Edmo, you've got me worried now since you had to send yours back twice. I won't be happy now til I give it a good once over and put a box of .38's through it.

I don't plan on shooting any .357, probably keep it as a house gun and keep carrying my 638.

I do plan on replacing the short grips with some full size synthetics.
Thanks for the feedback.

Yup. I retired my old 49 and bought the 640Pro because I could see the sights. No regrets on my part and no problems with the gun.

I've had bad luck with small S&W revolvers over the last few years.

I'm "that guy" who seems to get the guns made on Monday morning. Others here have had nothing but perfect guns while I've had lemons.

Of the last four S&W wheel guns I've bought, three have made the trip back to the mothership for either repair or replacement. My 640 is one of them.

You shouldn't worry about your 640, I think they save up all the bad ones for me!

I think you will be pleased with it. Yes, it's a bit heavier but I figured that was a positive and going to be easier on my arthritis.

The only minor issues I've found have been that speed loaders may not work well depending on the grips you put on (but apparently that is not unknown with J-Frames)...I had issues with both the stock ones and Pachmayrs so am using speed strips and looking at moon clips.

The other is to be cautious when holster buying. With the higher sights, depending on holster design, they can get caught up.

After reading all these reviews, I ordered a 640 Pro Series. One of my favorite Smiths is my 640. So I thought I would treat myself to a Pro. Only took two long days to get it! Looks great and looking forward to some shooting. You guys are expensive to visit! But fun. Thanks for all the great advice. Great forum.

I love mine, have had it several years and carry it most of the time.
